Fresh Music Friday: BTS, John Legend, Ashe ft Niall Horan, and MORE!

Welcome to Fresh Music Friday; where every week we at The Honey POP will be giving you the lowdown on this week’s sweetest releases! Here’s your chance to see what your faves have been up to as well as discover some new music which you can easily fall in love with.

‘Stay Gold’ – BTS

When the clouds are gray, always look for the silver lining – or in this case, the gold one. BTS are back with the lead single off the Japanese edition of their latest album Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey and it’s the message of hope and positivity that many of us need. The hip hop beats blend with the bouncy piano instrumentals the create the perfect background for the boys’ velvety vocals as they encourage people to keep spirits high even when going through the trials and tribulations that life tends to throw at us, perhaps an understatement to this year. The single will also appear on the Original Soundtrack for Japanese drama Spiral Labyrinth – DNA Forensic. We at Fresh Music Friday can already feel a boost in our moods listening to this!

‘Moral of the Story’ – Ashe featuring Niall Horan

Niall Horan has hopped on a new version of Ashe’s hugely popular song ‘Moral of the Story’ which found fame on the soundtrack for Netflix original To All The Boys: PS I Still Love You and we didn’t realize we could love a song anymore, but here we are! Niall’s newly-added lyrics to the Finneas produced track adds another dimension to the ballad which chronicles a frail relationship that sees the couple fall in love with the idea of each other before the reality of who they are comes to light. If you weren’t obsessed with this song already, you will be now!

‘Experience’ – Victoria Monét (With Khalid and SG Lewis)

Time for another collab at Fresh Music Friday! Another dance tune to wipe away the worry and stress. Victoria Monét, SG Lewis, and Khalid team up in ‘Experience’. Just shy of three minutes but it is sure to get your up on your feet. The vocals flit wonderfully into one another like bodies on the dance floor. The music is kept light and airy adding to the light-hearted feeling the song brings. We’ve all had ‘Experience’ in this department, going out for a good time to put down the bitter taste. “Tell me what you came for Here cause I’m breaking down Tryin’ not to make this obvious Tell me what you came for.” So forced it seems false, the lyrics turn the buoyant tune into something more than just getting lost in the music.

GO LIVE – Stray Kids

Stray Kids have returned with their new album GO LIVE! The album is the perfect balance between the noise music we love, such as in lead track ‘God’s Menu’, to Pop, such as in the acoustic song ‘Another Day’ and faster-paced songs like ‘Phobia’. This album highlights what Stray Kids is known for, powerful sounds that hype up the listener, but having that blend and mix of sounds to create a harmony only they can deliver. It highlights the strengths of their rap line and vocal line, showcasing how Stray Kids keep evolving with each comeback they bring.

Bigger Love – John Legend

John Legend, the king of ballads, has just dropped his 8th studio album Bigger Love and we’re already gushing! With a solid sixteen tracks, professing his love for his wife Chrissy Teigen and his family, we’re trying not to cry because of all the feels. Some of our favorites include the beautiful ‘I Do’ (our choice for the first dance at our future wedding) ‘Wild’, and ‘Never Break’. It feels as though Legend took a risk by leaving his comfort zone with this album and we’re so glad he did. If you’re looking for a soft and wholesome album this Friday then this is just the ticket!

Translation – Black Eyed Peas

Black Eyed Peas are back with their new album Translation which feels like quite the turning point for the trio as they embrace a new sound which is currently dominating the Latin charts as they mix reggaeton, trap, dance, and hip-hop. And, after their current chart-topper ‘Mamacita’, this concoction is something which works for them right now. Featuring the likes of Becky G, J Balvin, and Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas have utilized their numerous features to perfection adding zest to their trenchant sound. This is definitely a contender for your summer soundtrack and we at Fresh Music Friday are stoked to have the Peas back on our airwaves!

The Album – Teyana Taylor

Teyana Taylor’s The Album is pure R&B gold. A good mix of hip-hop and R&B, with some big-name featured artists, what’s not to love? She released the album to be out for Juneteenth to have it out as a celebration of her people and her culture. Each song has it’s own style that’s got us wanting to listen to it more and more. The Album is exactly what we hoped for and more from Teyana Taylor, and we at Fresh Music Friday will be listening to it all day.

‘Perfect Way to Die’ – Alicia Keys

A pretty little piano tune greets us this sleepy Friday morning. Alicia Keys is hitting those lovely notes again this time in ‘Perfect Way To Die’. The music is somber as the title might suggest. There’s a lot of unrest in the world, especially when it comes to race “Simple walk to the corner store
Momma never thought she would be getting a call from the coroner
Said her son’s been gunned down, been gunned down”. One simple outing can turn into the worst outcome imaginable.

Inspired by the killings of Mike Brown (Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014) and Sandra Bland (Texas in 2015). She explained in an interview with Trevor Noah, “This deeply rooted racism, this police brutality, this treatment of black people that is just completely unacceptable. To the point where daily we are seeing lives lost, people murdered for… nothing, nothing. For being black. I’m just so honored that this song can be alive in this time when we really are on the precipice of great change.”

‘Anbu’ – Lee Sun Hee featuring Chanyeol

We’ve been blessed with a collaboration from veteran singer Lee Sun Hee and EXO‘s one and only Chanyeol with this euphonious new single. The alleviating track from the two legendary artists hears the pair’s vocals entwine beautifully in a comforting message which acts as a friend asking someone how they’re doing during hardships. Chanyeol’s simple rap fuses so well with the honey warm vocals of Lee Sun Hee, creating the perfect harmony.

‘Cry’ – Ashnikko featuring Grimes

Everyone’s favorite blue-haired, punk rock rapper is back with (yet another) mega-hit. Only this time, she’s brought Grimes along for the ride! The resulting track and music video are all the right amounts of weird, catchy, and hard-hitting. Grimes brings this song another ethereal dimension altogether which we are truly here for. Add this to our heavy rotation!

‘Apocalipsis’ – Isabela Merced

Actor/Singer powerhouse, Isabela Merced has just dropped the music video for her sultry summer tune ‘Apocalipsis’. Written about a past toxic relationship, it’s heartfelt lyrics detail the realization about just how unhealthy her relationship was. As for the music video, we’re in love with how unique it is. Filmed at her home during quarantine, the music video captures the many emotions people are feeling in isolation. Full of intricate dance moves and camera angles, it’s a masterpiece we’ll be watching all weekend long!

‘Breathe’ – Knuckle Puck featuring Derek Sanders

Chicago’s Knuckle Puck released a new song and video featuring Derek Sanders of Mayday Parade, creating a stellar pop-punk jam. Who better to do it that these dudes? The single ‘Breathe’ graces us with magical dual vocals between vocalist Joe Taylor and guitarist/vocalist Nick Casasanto. The contrast between the two flows perfectly with a flair at the end with the Derek Sanders feature. The song opens up the idea that sometimes life is hard, overwhelming, and nearly impossible, but sometimes all you can do yourself is to breathe. This is how a pop-punk song should sound. Their album 20/20 featuring this single as well as singles ‘Tune You Out’ and ‘ ‘RSVP’ have us hype as hell for what they’ve put together. Look for the album 20/20 out September 18th via Rise Records.

Bringing us a music video shot in early May 2020 Gnash gives us a new song and music video for ‘Outside/Inside’. Some light fun with green screens and flashing headlines all to do with one thing. Coronavirus. This has taken our world and brought a new kind of fear; the fear of the unseen. We’re forced to be self-exploratory. In a way, this gives every one of us the opportunity to re-evaluate our hopes, dreams, and the issues we believe in. We can take this opportunity to love, grow, and maybe even change.

Punisher – Phoebe Bridgers

Strap in for a dose of sweet melancholy as Phoebe Bridgers drops her sophomore album Punisher. Our sad indie queen treated us all to this highly anticipated record a day early, telling fans she wasn’t waiting for things to go back to ‘normal’ because she ‘doesn’t think they should’.

Now, we have a sweet spot for soft and sad albums, so with lyrics like ‘Whenever I feel good, It’ll be the last time’ you can catch us sobbing our hearts out. ‘Punisher’ incites the emotion of a goodbye kiss on a stormy summer night so if you’re looking for your next obsession then this record is perfect!
