As soon as we heard this line we pictured a person from our past, maybe you did too. That’s the beauty of an artist like Lauren Spencer-Smith: she lays it all out and puts the things that we don’t know how to say into words. The ability to admit that someone you fell for is wrong for you is tough, but a necessary part of moving on.
“The version of you in my head now I know wasn’t true”
When we love someone, we often build them up in our heads, especially when they only show us glimpses of who they really are. That is how we rationalize loving someone who mistreats us because we’ve created a secondary version of them. It’s the sad but true reality, and Lauren wasn’t afraid to point that out.
“Who are you to tell me that I can’t be heartbroken?”
It’s the ultimate paradox when the person who breaks your heart tries to tell you how to react to their actions. So many of us have dealt with people who’ve put us in that position of almost feeling guilty for how we handle heartbreak, and Lauren is gonna help so many people feel less alone in that with this lyric.
