Ever since we set up our hive that is The Honey POP, we’ve brought you an annual list of artists we claimed to be ones to watch. Four years into THP, we’ve been reminiscing and looking back at these hopeful musicians and sharing some of the many that we predicted would be big, with a humble little “we told you so!”
We predicted that Maisie Peters would be a big deal in our Ones To Watch for 2022. Having signed with Gingerbread Man Records back in 2021, she spent a lot of time this year on the road opening for her boss Ed Sheeran on the +–=÷x Tour which helped the world find out what our girl is all about. Maisie dropped bangers ‘Blonde,’ ‘Cate’s Brother,’ and ‘Not Another Rockstar’ which have helped to further her fanbase. She’s about to embark on a tour of her own in the US to end her firecracker of a year before touring the UK in Spring 2023.
Formed on i-LAND back in 2020, we predicted that ENHYPEN would be ones to watch in 2021, and they’ve been truly making a name for themselves ever since. They’ve already won a number of awards including Rookie of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards, New Artist of the Year at the Gaon Chart Music Awards, and Rookie Artist of the Year at the Golden Disk Awards. Earlier this year they landed their first No. 1 on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart with Manifesto: Day 1 and have also received several platinum certifications from KMCA and gold from RIAJ. They’ve gained a number of notable achievements including the fastest K-Pop group to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify as well as the fastest and youngest K-Pop group to have 2 million-seller albums. The only way is up for ENHYPEN!
Making it to our first list of Ones To Watch back in 2020, Celeste has truly taken strides in her career. She’s already won a BRIT Award for Rising Star, as well as winning both Introducing Artist Of The Year and Sound Of 2020 from the BBC, not to mention a nomination for an Oscar and Mercury Prize in 2021. Her debut album Not Your Muse also gained the No.1 spot on the UK charts. We can’t wait to see what’s next for her!
It’s only back in January that Wet Leg made it to our Ones To Watch list and they’re already doing so much! They dropped their self-titled debut album earlier this year which topped the charts in both the UK and the US and positioned at number 14 on the Billboard 200. They’ve also been nominated for the Mercury Prize and for Best Push at the MTV EMAs which is an exciting way to end this fire year they’ve been having. And it’s not just us who see the potential in Wet Leg, because Harry Styles not only decided to cover their song ‘Wet Dream,’ but also invited them to tour with him next year! Just so it’s on record, we called their success before Mr. Styles.
FLETCHER made it to our ones-to-watch list back in 2020 and we’ve stanned her ever since. After releasing a couple of EPs, and collabing with Kito, Hayley Kiyoko, and Olivia O’Brien, as well as Niall Horan on a Spotify single, this year FLETCHER released her debut album Girl Of My Dreams which debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200. She’s currently touring with her Girl Of My Dreams Tour before heading out for UK and Europe dates next spring. We’re always rooting for our gal!
What a whirlwind it’s been for Aespa! We pegged them as ones to watch back in 2021, and they’ve truly proven they’re a force to be reckoned with in the K-Pop industry. They already have a number of awards under their belts including Rookie of the Year in Asia Artist Awards, World Rookie Of The Year at the Gaon Chart Music Awards, and Record of the Year at the Melon Music Awards while also placing on Forbes Asia 30 under 30 and TIME’s Next Generation Leaders. Earlier this year they took to the Coachella stage to perform They also attended the UN to deliver a speech on sustainability. They’ve earned platinum and million certifications from KMCA and have placed on the Billboard charts several times, even becoming the third-ever K-Pop girl group to ever chart on Billboard 200 for 3 consecutive weeks earlier this year. We’re living for their reign!
Back in 2021, we said that the TikTok popular band New Rules were ones to watch for sure. In September of 2021, they signed with Elektra Records before dropping the single ‘Really Wanna Dance With You.’ Since their signing, the boys have released their first mixtape as a signed band Go The Distance, before dropping their Name Songs EP. They’ve also performed several headline shows including in New York, Los Angeles, and London before announcing their UK and Ireland tour in 2023. We love to see it!
Dylan is an OG THP feature who we have been rooting for since the launch of THP, and she’s proved us right! Since featuring on our Ones To Watch 2020, Dylan has toured with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Yungblud, Bastille, and Tate McRae while also performing at festivals such as Latitude and Lollapalooza. She’s now gearing up for a mini UK acoustic tour to celebrate the release of her new EP The Greatest Thing I’ll Never Learn before her European tour kicks off in February. Booked and busy, we can’t help but stan!
Back in January, we dubbed Latto as one of our ones to watch and she’s been on the grind ever since. She won Song of the Year at this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards as well as Best New Artist at the BET Awards, where she performed with the one and only Mariah Carey at the awards show. She’s currently on the road as the support act for Lizzo on The Special Tour. Latto also dropped her debut album 777 back in march and joined forces with the likes of Kali, Saucy Santana, and Lil Wayne for collabs. We’re excited to see what’s next for our girl!
In 2021, we said it was high time for The Boyz to shine and we were right. From competing on Kingdom to their second world tour, there’s been so much on the cards for the 11-piece K-Pop group. With awards such as the Artist of the Year Bonsang at The Fact Music Awards, Best Performance, and Next Generation Awards at the Golden Disk Awards, we are bursting with pride at how much they’ve blossomed in recent years. They also became the first 4th Gen boy group to win every music award back last year! With their fifth anniversary rapidly approaching, we’re so excited to witness their journey continue.
Girl In Red
Girl In Red featured on our Ones To Watch back in 2021 and she’s only continued to make a name for herself. Her debut album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, also placed in the Top 10 in the UK and Australia, as well as making it to the Billboard Hot 100. She’s since signed to Columbia Records, performed at Coachella and Reading Festival, as well as the MTV EMAs. She also won the Spellemann prize which is often referred to as the Norwegian GRAMMY Awards, which was handed to her by Billie Eilish during her performance at Coachella. “Do you listen to Girl in Red?” Yes, we do, and we couldn’t be more proud!
We knew in our hearts that GAYLE was going to be more than just a one-hit wonder with ‘ABCDEFU,’ and we were right! Following the success of her viral hit, she became an MTV PUSH artist for February and dropped two EPs as part of her A Study of the Human Experience. She also joined forces with Justus Bennetts and Blackbear for collabs and performed at a variety of festivals including iHeartRadio and ACL. She’s also just been nominated for Best New Artist at the AMAs. We told you she was worthy of being on our Ones To Watch list!
It’s like we have a magic power when it comes to predicting which artists are set to become the next big thing. Let’s see if we get more right next year, eh?
Do you stan any of our Ones To Watch? Have you ever called it when it came to rising artists? Let us know down in the comments or by tweeting @TheHoneyPOP!
