Our Favorite Moments From The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

It’s that time of the year when our favorite TV shows and movies are getting a little holiday makeover! One of the most fun releases yet has just dropped on Disney+. It’s always a good time when you’re watching The Guardians, but there’s something extra magical about this holiday special. Here’s a little round-up of some of our fave moments from the Marvel special!

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Proceed with caution! For those of you who have already watched it though, let’s get into it!

More MCU Siblings!

We had an inkling that this was going to happen at some point, and we’re so glad it has! If you’re like us and have watched GoTG Vol.2 more times than you’d like to disclose, you might’ve spotted when Ego was talking about all the different species he’s tried to create children with celestial power with, a figure appeared that looks similar to Mantis. This has led some fans to believe for years that Mantis may be another one of Ego’s celestial hybrid children.

We finally got it, people! One of the dilemmas for Mantis in the special is whether or not to divulge to Quill that they are siblings. She eventually tells him, and the moment has warmed our hearts this frosty holiday season. This has so many fun implications for the MCU past and future. Among many other things, it may explain how Mantis was so powerful she could briefly control Thanos in Infinity War. One thing we are concerned about is that the MCU loves a dead sibling trope, and we’ve been hurt by it many times (see Loki and Thor + Yelena and Natasha). With Guardians of The Galaxy 3 on the horizon, we are scared. James Gunn, if you see this, spare them!!

Kevin Bacon. That’s All.

What a legend. We wish that Kevin Bacon would travel with the Guardians gang forever. Okay, okay, he doesn’t quite fit into the whole galactic savior squad, but this holiday special was so fun. If we were being abducted by alien folk and taken to another planet to be gifted to another person, we would be equally terrified. Good thing Mantis was on hand to influence his reactions (even if it might’ve been just because she hates actors.) Kevin Bacon may not be a hero IRL but he’s a hero to us.

Mantis and Drax

Now, this is a double act that we could watch forever. If the MCU is putting out shows, we hope eventually, we get to see a Drax and Mantis spin-off. They could be fighting crime, abducting more famous celebrities to please Quill, or just doing arbitrary daily tasks, and we’re sure we’d have a ball watching them. They had so much fun together in this Christmas special and brought so much energy to the screens!

We also have to give an enormous shoutout to the incredible Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, because she nails this role. Without the sincerity and good-meaning nature she brings to the character, this storyline would be simply bananas. With Pom’s acting, they somehow pull it off perfectly. Mantis’ may try to do what she thinks is best and the sweet-natured energy Pom brings just makes it ten times funnier to see her doing crime. When you’ve mainly been socialized with a murderous celestial, a criminal gang turned galaxy defenders, and The Avengers, it’s easy to see why she is the way she is. She took the starring role in this Christmas special, and we hope we see even more Mantis when the next Guardians of the Galaxy volume is released!

Nebula’s Gift To Rocket

We had to do a double-take when this scene came up! Nebula feels like part of the Guardians family now, and her gift to Rocket proved just how well she knows them. We think it’s absolutely hilarious that she gifts Rocket Bucky Barnes’ arm and a brilliant call back to 2018’s Infinity War. He did say he’d get that arm…

However brilliant this moment was, it left us with so many questions. Mainly, how did she get Bucky’s arm and what did she do to get it? We appreciate Nebula’s holiday spirit though, what can we say? She knows what Rocket wants!

The Best Modern Christmas Song

When a band from Knowhere said they’d written Quill a Christmas song, we didn’t know what to expect. Whatever we were expecting, it wasn’t what we got. The outcome was so much better than we could’ve dreamed of! This might not be a number we’d play in front of the kids, but this is certainly being added to our adult holiday mix. ‘I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime is Here)’ had us in stitches the entire time. Luckily it’s available on Spotify! Bonus points go to you if you recognized the band as the Old 97’s!

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was so much fun to watch, and it’s all down to the amazing cast and crew. Director James Gunn really brings these characters to life and we can’t wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
