Kelly Clarkson has been a hitmaker since 2002. After her rise through American Idol, she gave us pop classic after pop classic, including power girl anthem ‘Miss Independent’ and the gutwrenching ballad ‘Breakaway.’ Now she’s prepared to blow our minds again with her upcoming tenth studio album Chemistry out this summer. Kelly gave us our first glimpse into the upcoming project with her double single release of ‘mine’/’me,’ and the anticipation is real!
‘mine’
In the first of our glorious double feature, ‘mine’ tells the story about staying in a relationship that no longer serves you hoping things would change. When it begins, this love is nothing short of magical. You feel like you can do anything…and then they break your heart into a million pieces. Although ‘mine’ serves us a slightly vengeful undertone with lyrics like, “someone’s gonna show you how a heart can be used like you did mine,” ‘mine’ is more about letting go of a love that makes you lose your shine and the distrust that can come afterward. RIP our hearts because this one killed us!
‘me’
A contrast to ‘mine,’ this is an empowering anthem about finding yourself. After putting all of yourself, your heart, and your soul, into someone else, ‘me’ is the ever-after we all hope to get. Kelly inspires us to pick up the pieces, let go of the pain, and find that spark again. We don’t have to rely on anyone to provide us happiness when true happiness comes from within. These two songs come together perfectly to show us the beginning and the end, the light and the dark of heartbreak and redemption. What more could we ask for?
We decided to release ‘mine’ and ‘me’ at the same time because I didn’t want to release just one song to represent an entire album, or relationship. There are many stages of grief and loss on this album. Each song is a different stage and emotional state.
