It’s never been a secret that we’re huge indie music fans over here at The Honey POP! So naturally we’re ready to spill all the details on the indie artists that have us in a chokehold at the moment. And who else would be at the top of that list if not Sydney Sprague? Whether we’re talking about her sultry and hypnotic vocals or the music behind that voice that makes us hit repeat every single time – Sydney has nothing but talent and bangers worth writing home about.
Sydney’s newest release ‘smiley face’ has been one of our favorite gifts of 2023 so far. It’s not like we’ve gotten over the masterpiece that is maybe I will see you at the end of the world. We mean, ‘object permanence’ was written specifically for and about us after all. But her new single ‘smiley face’ has us cheesing in a whole different way. This track has an electro-punk sound that is forever etched into our minds. This is the kind of song you can’t get out of your head for weeks on end. But not in the “driven to full insanity” kind of way. More like the “I could write novels about this” kind of way.
The video for this track offers an even more insane view of the song. The video was created entirely through CGI and other similar creation tools. It showcases Sydney and her band as avatars that we can watch explore a metaverse of their own creation. Pair this with Sydney herself flying off into the sun at the end, and it’s the ending that Icarus could only ever dream of! For a song centered around a dream so pleasant Sydney was laughing in her sleep, we think this video is more than the perfect fit. Sydney summed this exact thought up perfectly:
The visual parts of making music can be really stressful for me. So going into the making of this video the most important thing to me was that everyone involved was having a good time. That’s why I really love this video, because every part of it was us going “what’s the dumbest thing that could happen” and doing that.
