Book Overview

Summary: She’s written off more than she can chew…
Romance author Sophie Lyon’s ironic secret just went viral: she’s never been in love. Though her debut novel made readers swoon, Sophie’s having trouble getting her new characters to happily-ever-after, and she blames it on her own uninspired love life. With a manuscript deadline looming, Sophie makes an ambitious plan to overcome her writer’s block: reunite with her exes to learn why she’s never fallen in love—and document it all for her millions of new online followers. That also means facing her ex-girlfriend Carla, the one person Sophie could have loved.
Luckily, Sophie’s reclusive landlord, Dash Montrose—a former teen heartthrob—has social media all figured out and offers to help. What he doesn’t mention is that he’s an anonymous online crafter, a hobby that helps him maintain his sobriety. No one knows about his complicated relationship with alcohol and he intends to keep it that way. His family is Hollywood royalty, so Dash has to steer clear of scandal.
As Sophie and Dash grow closer, they discover a heat between them that rivals Dash’s pottery kiln. But Sophie needs to figure out who she is outside her relationships, and Dash isn’t sure he’s stable enough for the commitment she deserves. So Sophie suggests what any good romance author would: a friends with benefits arrangement. Surely a strictly casual relationship won’t cause any trouble…
The Romance
Plot Twist had us giggling from the sweetness in Sophie and Dash’s romance. And we had to look over our shoulders to make sure no one caught us reading the spicy scenes. It’s all about balance, right? But Dash is Sophie’s best friend’s brother, so you can imagine how difficult it was keeping their relationship secret. We also get the “only one-bed” trope and mutual pining. And as fate would have it, neither of them knows about the other’s feelings.
The Incorporation Of TikTok
Let’s face it: there’s no denying the power of TikTok and the influence of BookTok on our TBR lists. So when Sophie takes to TikTok to highlight the meetings with her exes, we feel like actual audience members. She describes each of her exes and leaves room for us to speculate how each meeting goes. We feel like we’re scrolling, and her TikTok videos are the first thing on our FYP. It’s all very meta.
The Callbacks To For Butter Or Worse
For anyone who doesn’t know, For Butter Or Worse is Erin La Rosa’s debut romance novel. It features Sophie’s older sister, Nina Lyon! Nina and her best friend, Jasmine, make surprise cameos in Plot Twist. And we love getting some life updates about Nina’s new cooking show, Jasmine’s restaurant, and Nina and Leo’s relationship. And while you didn’t have to read Erin La Rosa’s debut before getting into Plot Twist, we highly recommend it! It makes us wonder who the next book will be about.
Erin La Rosa crafts the romantic journey between Sophie and Dash so carefully, giving her latest novel, Plot Twist, the perfect balance of sweetness and spice!
