Summer Walker, the R&B singer based in Atlanta, GA, has released her sophomore album “Over It.” Known for her slow, vibey songs, Summer delivers an 18-track record that is guaranteed to once leave you in your feelings. Her past album “Last Day of Summer” left fans on emotional roller coasters (especially when it comes to her words regarding relationships). Her music will either leave you throwing your middle fingers up at relationships or make you crave one even more. Needless to say, “Over It” has the potential to give fans the same effect they had from her previous album.
Why Summer killed it!
Many fellow R&B artists joined in with Summer on the project— such as Jhene Aiko, PARTYNEXTDOOR (Yes, y’all, she got him out of hiding!), Usher, Bryson Tiller, 6lack, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and Drake. All of these artists have different, unique sounds that also complimented her tracks as well. Take “Come Thru” for example— Summer puts her on twist on the track using a sample from Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna.” Not only does Usher tackles the song with her, but he brings back the vibes given from his older track. Definitely a jam worth putting in your R&B playlist!
Even though all of the collabs on the album are just *chef kiss*, another one of our favorites is “Just Might” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR. With his absence from music aside, “Just Might‘”is composed of beautiful melodies and expressions of the lack of hope for love. In the bridge, she sings: “Love is a losing game, and I just can’t take no more.” I felt that — WE felt that. Girls who haven’t been in relationships felt that.
The album also features her current single “Playing Games“, This song relates to many women when it comes to relationships— wanting more effort and the love they deserve. She once again references back to a R&B classic– ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child. “So wont you say my name, say my name. If you really want me, it ain’t a thing.”
Along with the original version of the song, she also includes an extended version of the song featuring Bryson Tiller. If you think this is the ultimate dream collab, imagine the features she will have in her next project!
