OH. MY. GOD. IT IS HAPPENING. IT IS (PROBABLY) HAPPENING. A Friends Reunion is in the works!
Sources exclusively told The Hollywood Reporter that the six main characters plus the creates of the NBC comedy from Warner Bros TV are in talks to reunite on HBO Max.
Hold us, please.
Right now discussions are in progress for an unscripted reunion special which would feature Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross as well as the series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman. But it should be noted that a deal is not actually done and agreements with both the cast and creatives still need to be written up. Following that, the next challenge is to arrange everyone’s schedules. Okay, so can they all open their Google calendars and sort this out like now, please?!
This news comes about a month after reports of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air also being revived in the style of a reboot.
Right now HBO Max producers and WBTV declined to comment, which makes sense if nothing is yet a written deal.
Friends has been back in the spotlight since becoming part of the Netflix family. It is officially leaving the streamer by the end of 2019 and will make its debut on WarnerMedia-backed HBO max when the $15 monthly subscription platform launches at a date TBA.
It has been said that WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct-to-consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt is to thank for pushing for the Friends reunion. If this is 100% officially happening then Bob is going to be at the top of our holiday cards list for the rest of our days, okay?
For years both the cast and creators have been holding back on a reunion since the comedy concluded in its 10-season run and said they would not do any kind of scripted revival. Back in 2016, NBC staged a mini Friends reunion in 2016 contributing to a special honoring to legendary director and producer James Burrows. The main cast (minus Matthew Perry who was in London) participated in the look back which also featured the casts of The Big Bang Theory, Will and Grace, and Cheers.
But it seems as though things may have changed…
Speaking recently, Jennifer Aniston shot down the concept of a Friends reboot with a flat out “no” but did say: “We would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”
It turns out that something is now a something indeed. We don’t know what, but it’s a concept that’s being played with a lot and may very well be happening in the foreseeable future.
This needs to happen. It just has to, right?
Can you imagine a Friends reunion, though? What a way to kick off the new decade! What would it be like? The kids would all be grown up. Maybe Emma will be a teenage mom? Perhaps Ben got into an Ivy League? Could we have a baby Phoebe or Phoebo? GAH, the possibilities are endless.
What do you think – will this project 100% make it all the way to our TV screens? Are Ross and Rachel still together? Is Gunther still running Central Perk? So many questions. Let us know your thoughts and Friends reunion predictions down in the comments below or by tweeting us @TheHoneyPOP while we celebrate by ordering a Joey special and binging the season (again).
