Fresh Music Friday: Selena Gomez, Halsey, Conan Gray and MORE!

Welcome to Fresh Music Friday; where every week we at The Honey POP will be giving you the lowdown on this week’s sweetest releases! Here’s your chance to see what your faves have been up to as well as discover some new music which you can easily fall in love with.

‘Rare’ – Selena Gomez

After much anticipation, Selena Gomez’s third album is here! This is Selena’s first full-length release since 2015 and though it’s been quite the stressful wait for her fans, Rare was 100% worth the wait. Though we expected the album to follow in the heaviness of the lead single ‘Lose You To Love Me’, it’s actually taken a surprising turn, with the record offering a more freeing feeling, like when you find the light at the end of the tunnel, which is exactly what Selena has done. You can feel our happier Selena’s presence once more but with a side of maturity (as she has grown up after all) and with songs such as ‘Dance Again’ and ‘Fun’ (which deserves to be a single, btw), it goes to show that you can get back to a place of happiness, even after the darkest of times.

Rare offers a mix of sub-genres which each offers an important part to the recipe of a Selena album. From songs such as the title track offering a rhythm that gets your hips saying to ‘Ring’ which offers a more of a Latin pop flavor, the diversity of the album blends together so well and is the perfect concoction of a pop album. We are in LOVE.

‘Winter Flower’ – (Feat RM)

Following the release of her mini-album Unstable Mindset, Younha has teamed up with BTS‘s RM to drop the song ‘Winter Flower’ as a single. The track serves as a powerful anthem that harbors a message about mental health. The song was co-written by the duo alongside fellow Korean artist EDEN. With the powerful lyrics and beautiful melody, it’s no wonder that fans are loving this song and perhaps it’s coincidental but as Seasonal Affective Disorder rises once more, this is definitely something that many people need to hear right now.

‘You Should Be Sad’ – Halsey

Halsey takes sadness and gives it some country flair with her new single. We’re just days away from her third album dropping and from the sounds of this track alongside other singles from the upcoming record, Manic will be full of an eclectic sound. The country bop follows in the footsteps of last year’s cowboy trend which allows us to express our emotions all while busting a move through the tears. Catch us two-stepping through the tough days to this banger.

‘Diamonds’ – Megan Thee Stallion & Normani

If there’s a mood we want to carry throughout 2020 it’s the one from this certified bop. Taking place as the lead single from the Birds of Prey: THE ALBUM for the upcoming DC Harley Quinn movie is the girl boss anthem in the shape of the highly anticipated collaboration between two of the hottest rising artists of 2019. If Ariana Grande’s ‘7 Rings’ had an older sassier sister it would be ‘Diamonds’. The trap beat hears Megan Thee Stallion spitting rhymes as she raps about basically being a boss ass bitch who only needs herself while Normani’s silvery vocals take over on the chorus and bridge. It’s got all the potential of being a huge hit and we stand behind that campaign all the way!

‘The Story’ – Conan Gray

Slowing things down again here at Fresh Music Friday is Conan Gray who has delivered this solemn acoustic single which is his most honest and raw track yet. The heartbreaking lyrics narrate the trauma and tragedy of the suburbs such as bullying and sexual repression before finally finding escape to a better life, promising that “it’s not the end of the story.” Though the lyrics are heartrending, the message of hope is something that listeners can hold on to during their time of need and acts as a powerful reminder to keep going. The tearjerker of a single comes hot on the heels of the announcement of his debut album Kid Krow, which is set to release in March.

‘hungover & i miss u’ – gnash

Another sorrowful but beautiful release here at Fresh Music Friday is from Gnash. The multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer kick starts his new year with this stunning new single where he spiels his post-drunken thoughts about the person he once was blessed to have in his life. The indie bop has our mascara running but still slaps and is a great taste of his forthcoming EP which is set to release later in the year. 10/10 recommend listening to this when you’re in your feelings and need a good cry.

‘Stop This Flame’ – Celeste

Time to liven things up now and Celeste is doing just that. Having been crowned the winner of BBC Music’s Sound Of 2020 and BRITs Rising Star, we’ve been super excited to hear what kind of music she’d be putting out to prove what she’s made of. ‘Stop This Flame’ is a piano-driven R’n’B banger with a hint of Jazz that’s here to add a lease of life to the miserable Winter-time blues. If you’re new to Celeste then this is a great introductory track which urges you to listen to more of her discography – and we 100% back that urge, you should definitely be added more Celeste into your 2020.

‘Original’ – Sia

Our second soundtrack contribution for this week comes from Sia for the Dolittle Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and is the empowering track that you need to keep your spirits high this month. ‘Original’ displays Sia’s strong ability to uniquely inspire us through her lyrics. This motivating catchy track keeps a pop pace while maintaining real, raw relatable emotions. The fresh positivity of this song is warmly welcomed with the post-Christmas blues and we’re in love with it.

‘Conversations in the Dark’ – John Legend

If you’re looking for the soundtrack to capture a moment in time where you are falling in love, John Legend’s got you covered. This soft new single is a love letter that is penned to reflect the quiet conversations amongst two people when nobody else is there to hear them. The piano-based ballad with sweet lyrics perfectly illustrates the feelings you harbor at the beginning of a relationship, where you’re truly smitten with the other person. We can definitely see this being the song of many new couples and possibly wedding songs down the line.

The song is set to feature on NBC’s This Is Us where John will also be making a guest appearance.

‘Good News’ – Mac Miller

Despite the number of sad songs featured in today’s Fresh Music Friday, none will hit quite like this one. Released as the lead single from his posthumous album Circles, ‘Good News’ is a heart-wrencher to listen to, considering the context of its release. The lengthy track which almost hits 6 minutes long can be dubbed as a celebration of the artist that Miller was, and is a reminder as to why so many people love him.
