We’ve stayed waiting a long time for this, and now the time is finally here; Selena Gomez released her album Rare! The whole world has been looking forward to this album since 2015 after Revival was released, and we got a lot more excited after many hints it was finished. Back on June 10, 2019, Selena revealed that the album is “finally done.” Then, on December 12, she announced the title, release date, cover art, and tracklist. It’s been a long wait, and we’re happy to be able to say that the album is out, and it’s everything we could’ve hoped for!
The tracklist for the album has it beginning with the title track, ‘Rare’. It’s very special to see her start the album off with a song where she recognizes her worth, that she’s ‘rare,’ and that she can find someone else who will see that. After everything we’ve seen Selena go through in the public eye, starting her album with that kind of power is something we love to see.
RARE represents a look into my journey of healing and growth. It’s by far the work I am most proud of to date.
There’s a total of 13 songs on her album, each one diverse and has us feeling different emotions. One thing that’s hard to accomplish with having different types of songs is that when you put it together as an album, is the question of if it will feel like it all belongs together. Listening to her album, all the songs are connected like her story.

Breakdown of a Few Songs On Rare:
Right after ‘Rare’ is ‘Dance Again’. It feels like a celebration and feeling free after not feeling free for so long. Selena took her time to write this album and it’s been a while since her last tour. It would feel so good to ‘Dance Again’ after such a long break. We can all relate to that in our own way if we just replace the word ‘Dance’ with whatever we’ve been taking a break from, and that’s something not all songs have.
Selena Gomez truly shines on this album. Her voice is the best that we’ve ever heard it, her lyrics are the most vulnerable (especially in ‘Vulnerable’) and this is the happiest she’s been in a while. Listening to the songs gives me actual chills, her voice is powerful. Not only that, the music and meaning behind it is moving.
You Can Hear Her Friend’s Influences On Her Music
Of course, while we see her shine in her light, we can hear the influences on her music. Selena’s besties Taylor Swift and Julia Michaels definitely had some impact on her writing. The song ‘Cut You Off’ especially has the vibes of both Taylor and Julia, yet it’s still Selena Gomez. Of course, Julia Michaels had also helped write a few songs off the album, so it shouldn’t be a surprise.
There are two songs off the album that have featured artists. Including ‘A Sweeter Place’ featuring Kid Cudi and ‘Crowded Room’ featuring 6lack. In ‘Crowded Room,’ Selena brings her A-game with her sweet and higher voice throughout the song. While most of the album is about healing and growth, this song is about just being with somebody, and it’s one of our favorites.
Not to go into detail about every single song, but there’s still two more we’d like to touch on. ‘People You Know’ was a song that we were looking forward to, and we weren’t disappointed in the least. “People can go from people you know to people you don’t,” she sings in the song. Every single person can relate to this song honestly, and when Selena sings it a bit more vulnerable in the end, it feels so good to shout it with her. Why? Because that phrase is so true and we’ve all experienced it.
It’s Selena Gomez, But It Also Feels Like Alex Russo
The last song we wanted to go into more detail about is none other than ‘Ring’. There was someone who had said that this song sounds like Alex Russo, the character Selena played on the Disney Channel show Wizards Of Waverly Place. After hearing that, you can see how it makes sense. Alex Russo was kinda spunky and bold, and this song feels confident and bold. And you know what? Selena has always said that she and her character Alex are similar, so to see that her song feels like something Alex would sing is nice.
Overall, this album is full of hope and empowerment, healing and growth, as well as strength and power. And, every song is full of self-love and self-worth. The wait for this album was worth every day because we got something really special. Many artists have the main writing subject as heartbreak, but Selena Gomez made an album about healing and growth and it turned out incredible. She truly is ‘Rare.’
