How many Caribbean artists do you currently stan? We at The Honey Pop definitely recommend checking out Koffee, the youngest reggae artist ever to be nominated for a Grammy. Not only is she an incredibly talented Jamaican youth who’s modernizing reggae, but she also too sweet.
Mikayla “Koffee” Simpson began singing in church choir, taught herself guitar at 12 years old on a borrowed instrument, and began writing her own lyrics.
Initially, she wanted to be a pharmacist, but once she didn’t get through to form 6 she began writing her first song ‘Burning’ to inspire herself to push forward and not let anything extinguish her flame. “Literally it was me sparking a fire within myself to go forward and excel in something else.”
Koffee’s patriotism set her career in motion when a role model of hers, Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, re-posted her tribute of appreciation to him on his Instagram. Since then, she has performed with many of her idols and released her Grammy-nominated EP Rapture.
If that’s not enough for you to immediately head to her YouTube, we’ve compiled 5 more reasons to stan Koffee.
1. Just … everything she stands for is so refreshing
Koffee has been described as “exciting, forward thinking and globally focused.” She had this to say about her career:
“I want to be a positive movement and make a positive movement, at the same time. I want to bring vibes and positive change. I want to impact the world. With a lot of my music, it’s about entertaining people while highlighting problems in order to try and find a solution. I genuinely want to make the world a better place.” How can you not want her to succeed?
2. She’s not afraid to talk about the socio-political problems present in Jamaica through her lyrics
Koffee’s December 2018 single ‘Raggamuffin’ calls out gun violence and governmental neglect of the youth of Jamaica. Now that’s what we’re talkin’ about.
3. She’s incredibly humble
Her song lyrics, Instagram captions, interview answers, and everything in between include Koffee graciously thanking her fans, her mom, and everyone else who helped her along the way. She’s set on not losing sight of where she came from, as evident by the settings of her music videos in Jamaica.
Check out her single ‘Toast’ where Koffee takes us on a tour around her home, Spanish Town.
4. She’s gonna open for Harry Styles later this year!!
Koffee was announced as an opening act for Harry Styles on select dates of his 2020 Tour, Love On Tour. Harry Styles knows her potential; her impact. We say hop on that support train.
5. Lastly, if reggae is not your thing, don’t worry; she’s diverse af
“I can see myself doing bashment, dancehall, everything. I’m not going to narrow myself to one thing. I want to try it all.”
We’re all excited to see where Koffee goes next, and we know she’s going to succeed while pumping out more politically-aware bangers.
