Ahead of their new album, Notes On A Conditional Form, The 1975 recently released their 4th single ‘The Birthday Party!’ This new single goes perfectly with the theme of the album so far, the digital world, technology and how it interferes with our lives and relationships.
In a recent interview with Dazed Magazine, lead singer Matty Healy mentioned our relationship with technology and how it’s become sort of like an addiction. “We all say, our relationship (with our phone) isn’t like that, everyone else is like that. ‘I’m on it because everyone else is on it. How could I work if I wasn’t on it, how could I operate without it?’ It’s the rhetoric of a heroin addict when you try and take their heroin away from them. It’s exactly the same.”
This new track talks about what it’s like in the social scene today, Healy mentioned in that same interview with Dazed that ‘The Birthday Party’ is about, “the interesting social minutiae of house parties.” The lyrics for the single also loop back to the thought of addiction, saying things like “I depend on my friends to stay clean/As sad as it seems,” and “There’s a place I’ve been going/Now I’m clean, it would seem.”
The video for ‘The Birthday Party’ is quite trippy and filled with memes and characters from the internet. It starts with Healy, checking into a digital detox facility. This isn’t regular Matty though, of course, The 1975 had to do something completely out of the box and make the whole video an animation. With life-like looking characters, weird virtual spaces and lots of viral dance moves, this video is definitely a journey. It took us into a new world!
We can’t wait to see how the rest Notes On A Conditional Form follow this technology theme, but as we wait for the album to be released in late April, we’ll just continue to try to understand this video.
