Fresh Music Friday: BTS, 5SOS, Selena Gomez and MORE!

Welcome to Fresh Music Friday; where every week we at The Honey POP will be giving you the lowdown on this week’s sweetest releases! Here’s your chance to see what your faves have been up to as well as discover some new music which you can easily fall in love with.

‘Map Of The Soul: 7’ – BTS

After 10 months since their last project, BTS are back with a bang and we cannot get enough. Map of the Soul: 7 is the perfect summary to how far the Bangtan boys have come in their seven years together. With tracks like their lead single ‘ON’ offering a more mature and new sound for the group, ‘Interlude: Shadow’, ‘UGH!’ ‘Respect’ and ‘Outro: Ego’ offer throwback to their origin full of edge. We are also blessed with some solid solo moments from each member, so you know you’re truly able to appreciate your bias as they take it in turn to shine. Map of the Soul: 7 shows growth while continuing to be true to their style. It has a lot to offer in terms of content and diversity, meaning we are never bored thanks to this hefty serve that BTS have graced us with. Dig in, ARMY – we have been fed.

‘Old Me’ – 5 Seconds of Summer

With just weeks to go until their fourth album drops, 5SOS are back with another new single and boy does it slap. The track pays tribute to the band’s past and who they used to be, thanking them for the life lessons which helped them grow. ‘Old Me‘ follows in the footsteps of the sound progression we have seen from the band in recent years, with their more mature sound infused with an EDM influence. The band released an accompanying lyric video with a ton of throwback photos from their childhood alongside clips from their humble beginnings on YouTube, creating the perfect nostalgia for the 5SOSFAM. Don’t look at us, we’re ugly crying rn!

‘Feel Me’ – Selena Gomez

Back with the latest single from Rare, Selena Gomez offers us the electro-pop bop ‘Feel Me’. The song was first debuted back on her Revival tour back in 2016 and had her fans – and us at Fresh Music Friday – obsessing ever since, so this single is a long time coming. But don’t be fooled by the club-friendly synths and beats, because the song is riddled with emotions as Selena sings about a fraying relationship. So if you feel like crying in the club, this is the song to request because you can really be in your feelings while still busting a move and that’s a whole mood.

‘The Birthday Party’ – The 1975

As Notes on a Conditional Form‘s release date rapidly approaches, The 1975 have come through once again with another new single and once again has a different vibe to previous releases from this album era. The single once again throws off all expectations for the upcoming record as it severely lacks the conventional structure. ‘The Birthday Party‘ gives a soft country vibe which meets The Sims soundtrack (We’re waiting for EA to include it in the next expansion pack tbh) with a splash of a hazy saxophone solo and lazy drum groove. Forever keeping their fans on their toes, this is a fine example of The 1975 keeping things fresh and continuously moving forward, something that we are all here for.

‘Sleeping In’ – All Time Low

All Time Low are back and boy are we glad to see them! The Baltimore gang has returned with an absolute banger in the shape of ‘Sleeping In’, which sees the band head back to their pop-punk roots with heavy instruments, punchy chorus and uptempo beats. The single is their second from their upcoming album Wake Up, Sunshine – their first full-length project since Last Young Renegade in 2017. And if the old skool vibes weren’t enough, peep the music video which sees the band find love in the form of pets, as they encourage their fans to adopt not shop and share links to worthy charities they want to support – we stan the right band!

‘The Man (Live From Paris)’ – Taylor Swift

Adding to the age-old debate of “which is better – live or studio recordings?” is Miss Taylor Swift as she drops ‘The Man (Live From Paris)’. The Speak Now World Tour Live was a true piece of artistry among Tay’s discography and this live rendition of ‘The Man’ really has us lusting over a new live album – which we really think is overdue, btw. The stunning performance hears Taylor’s pleasant timber vocals entwine with the strums of her acoustic guitar, bringing fire as she gets to the bridge, giving power to the feminist anthem like never before.

‘Modern Loneliness’ – Lauv

With days to go until his debut album How I’m Feeling, Lauv has dropped his new single ‘Modern Loneliness’, which is a song the artist deems his favorite, even getting a tattoo of the title back in January. Potentially his most introspective track, the song features a solemn beat as the singer spiels about a common yet personal struggle of loneliness in the current age. The piano-driven ballad speaks volumes which so many people can relate to and perhaps offers an understanding to those dealing with the ongoing issues surrounding mental wellbeing and isolation.
