Rent (Original 1996-Film version 2005-Live Remake 2019)

This gem is our go-to musical! This one shines a light on the Bohemians of New York City struggling with life, love, and AIDS, and the impact they have on America. It’s got LGBTQ+ representation, killer songs, dynamic cast members, and an amazing storyline. This movie is a classic and can be streamed on Hulu, SlingTv, and Starz. It’s also available to rent on iTunes, YouTube, and Google Play.

Newsies (Original 1992-Remake 2017)

We like to consider this movie a hidden Disney gem! The songs are so fun, and it tells an amazing story about what life was like in 1899. This one can be streamed on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, or you can rent it on YouTube, Google Play, and iTunes.

Hairspray (Original Film 1988-Remake 2007)

“What gives a girl power and punch? Is it charm, is it poise? No, it’s hairspray!” This musical is probably high on our list of favorite songs in a musical ever. It’s set in the 1960s before integration, and the main character Tracy uses her newfound fame status to bring integration into show biz. We love that, what an icon! This one can be streamed on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.

Grease (Original 1978- Live Remake 2016)

Is this our favorite musical? Why yes, yes it is! It’s such a classic, and just about everyone will have at least heard of this one! In this one, we follow the lives of teens trying to navigate the ups and downs of their senior year of high school, along with real-world issues like love, teen pregnancy, bullies, and trying to figure out what to do with your life. This one can be streamed on Philo, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, and iTunes.

The Phantom Of The Opera (Original 1986-Film version 2004)

Here we have yet another classic, especially to those of us who were obsessed with musical theater. This one has drama, romance, and a bit of a thriller aspect, which makes for one hell of an unbelievable plotline, and the songs are to die for! You can stream this one on YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play.

West Side Story (Original 1957-Film version 1961)

This famous musical is based on Shakespeare’s play, Romeo & Juliet. It explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The protagonist, Tony, falls in love with Maria, who is the sister of the rival gang’s leader. It focuses a lot on social problems in the world, and when you add in the songs, it’s pretty dope! This one can be streamed on Hulu, Starz, and SlingTV. You can also rent it on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and iTunes.

Les Misérables (Original 1980- Remake 2012)

This fine musical is an epic, historical period film. It’s based on a novel by the same name written by Victor Hugo. This musical’s plot is a bit heavier than any of the others previously mentioned as we follow an ex-convict as he tries to get his life together, a poverty-stricken mother who has to turn to prostitution to provide for her daughter, and many more characters as they live their lives in the late 1800s. Nonetheless, it’s an incredibly moving film! This one can be streamed on HBO and Hulu, or you can rent it on YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play.

Annie (Original 1977-Film Version 1982-1st Remake 1999- 2nd Remake 2014)

Who doesn’t love this musical? We’ve been watching this one since we were just wee tots. Now, even as adults, this musical still makes us giddy every time we watch it. Little orphan Annie so desperately believes her parents left her at the orphanage by mistake, so when Mr. Warbucks takes her in for Christmas, he sets out to try and help the little girl find and finally meet her parents. We used to sing these songs daily while we did our chores because they are classics! This musical can be streamed on Disney+ and can also be rented on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and iTunes.

There you have it, our top 8 favorite musicals of all time! We just know we’re going to be able to Swept Away to this list before too long as we have high hopes for The Avett Brothers inspired musical!
