If you are a hardcore Honey Popper, then you will know that we recently had the privilege to read the book, All My Love, Alec Brock in advance to its release. Larissa Lopes is the author of the series, and we are honored to have been able to interview her and get some of our burning (non-spoiler) questions answered for #Brockies everywhere!
So, you lovely buncha book worms you, sit back, relax, and enjoy learning a little bit about your new favorite author!
Throughout your writing process, who was your biggest supporter?
Well, this is complicated…I was living on my own in France when I wrote All My Love, Alec Brock. Everyone that I cared about was very far away—most of them in a different country. So my family and friends all encouraged me a lot from a distance, but the daily emotional support that “kept me going” came from an unconventional source: my favorite artists and their songs.
Since there was literally no one around to help, I started to rely on music to “stay strong.” So, the artists who “kept me company” and helped me go through the writing/publishing process were: The Vamps, 5SOS, Shawn Mendes and Harry Styles. (That’s why they also inspired me to write characters in the story.) They were my friends and family when I was all alone, and I really wouldn’t have gotten here without their “help.”
Do you have a favorite author that may have inspired you on your writing journey?
I have a few, actually: JK Rowling, Stephanie Meyer, John Green, Becky Albertalli… They all inspired me so much! I even made a vision board in my old room with their pictures and the sentence: “If they can do it, I can do it.” So whenever I felt discouraged, they were the ones who reminded me that “I could do it.”
We know you have answered a similar question on a previous Instagram live, but for those who didn’t see that, can you explain to other upcoming authors what you do to try and stay motivated or focused on your work?
The most effective thing I do to stay motivated is to take 5 to 10 minutes every day to literally visualize my dream coming true! (And I always listen to the same songs when I’m doing it, because it helps me to get in the mood whenever I’m a little distracted.) I think it’s so important to keep your goal in mind. And if you don’t develop the habit of “dreaming about it,” you’re probably going to stop “thinking about it” and forget why you wanted to do this in the first place!
So, after you remind yourself of your purpose, the challenge is to stay focused. What I like to do is to reserve some time during the day to think exclusively about my project. It can be as little as one hour a day, but during that hour I will stay away from my phone (or any other distractions,) and I’ll allow myself to think only about my project. It’s not always easy, but I just keep reminding myself that whatever problem I have to solve, it can wait an hour or two. That’s how I like to protect my mind and my time, so I can actually do all the things I have to do.
When you sit down to write, do you have a process you follow in order to keep your mind clear and focused?
I usually just go to a quiet room and set an alarm on my phone for whatever time I have available. Then I put the phone away, and I know that until the alarm rings, I’m only allowed to think about my project. It feels like torture in the beginning (get ready for the urge to check your social media accounts or to go do something else from your To-Do List), but I promise you’ll get used to it eventually. I’m so addicted to this strategy by now that I must set an alarm for everything—lunch, shower, bathroom breaks, bedtime. Because, since I live on my own, sometimes it’s hard for me to “unfocus” and come back to the real world! LOL
Did writing the Alec Brock series flood you with any new inspiration for future series?
Yes and no. I think I haven’t gotten the chance to think about “anything else” yet—because Alec Brock completely took over my life since the day I first dreamed about him. But before I met Alec, I was working on this other story about soulmates! So I’m excited to go back to this previous project and develop it into a new book series.
Besides Alec and Linda, which character from your series is your favorite, and why? Or which one did you enjoy writing about the most?
It was definitely not easy, but I really enjoyed writing Impostor Alec! I had to keep his identity a secret but also give the readers all the information they needed in order to solve the mystery, so this was a lot of fun! (Especially because I picture 3 of the Impostor Alec suspects as the members of 5SOS in my head! LOL) Among the suspects, I particularly enjoyed writing Zach (the one inspired by Michael Clifford). He’s more present in the second book in the series, but he’s so funny and sarcastic! I think a lot of readers will LOVE (and probably also HATE) him!
We know we would absolutely LOVE to see Alec on the big screen if you could cast the roles yourself who would some of your ideal cast be?
Can I cast Mr. Harry Styles himself? Because he would definitely be my first choice! LOL. I can’t picture anybody else, to be honest…(Besides Shawn Mendes and Brad Simpson, the other artists that inspired Alec Brock.) I think maybe I’d rather see new faces playing Alec and Linda—actors we haven’t seen in any big movie yet. Because the fandom’s expectations will be so high (especially about Alec) that it’s probably a good idea to just surprise them with something new.
(I hope they find someone who looks like Harry, though. Because he really would be perfect for the role!)
If your book WAS picked up for a movie, would you want them to focus more on the romance or the mystery of the novel?
They would have to keep some sort of balance, for sure. But I think the romance is what the readers love the most, so I would be thrilled to see that being developed in a movie! Especially the musical aspect of the romance—Linda as a fangirl; the concert scenes; Alec’s songs. I would really LOVE to see all that on the big screen! 🙂
What is your biggest goal moving forward for yourself and your writing career?
My biggest goal is to keep “doing what I love” for the rest of my life. I was in my last year of Ph.D. (in Geography) when I had the idea for the Alec Brock series. And my heart spoke to me so loudly—the inspiration was so strong—that it made me quit my job at the university and start a completely different career. So all I want right now is to keep following my heart, keep writing my stories! (And maybe, hopefully, also inspire other people to have the courage to pursue their dreams.)
You have stated so many times how grateful you are for your fans and the early #Brockies, I know it can be hard to express gratitude, but what is something you want to say to your fans (old and new)?
Linda says this sentence in the book: “Love is a spiritual experience, and even though that’s not how most people live it, we can feel it in all of its glory before even physically meeting that loved one.” And that’s exactly how I feel about the #Brockies! I genuinely LOVE them, because I can feel their love for me through the messages! Alec’s fandom has become as important to me as my own family and friends in Brazil. And because I live so far away from everybody that I care about, the #Brockies make me feel like I’m not alone, you know? That’s why I always get so emotional talking about them…In my day-to-day life, they are the only family I have!
So if they were all here in front of me, that’s what I would say: “I love you! (I really mean it.) And thank you for being with me at all times—thank you for being my family!”
