Welcome back to The Rap Up – where we give you all the new hip-hop/R&B releases from this week! The month of March has been very eventful in terms of music so far; let’s see what else has dropped as we wrap up the fourth week! The Rap Up will have you diving into these new releases!
Kendrick Lamar — To Pimp a Butterfly (5th anniversary)
Now, we know that this is not a new release, but we can’t leave out one of Kendrick’s best creations. This past Monday marked the fifth anniversary for Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly. Not only does he give us songs that will still live on for years from now, but he also gave us a story. Whether you’re new to his music, or a longtime fan, listen through this album and pay attention to the production, the lyrics, and the story throughout (his poem expands as you go through each track). TPAB resembles a piece of art, and we hope to receive another album similar to its style soon (That’s right, Kendrick, we’re on your case just like we are with Rihanna– where is the album)? Help us celebrate the rap legend; you can stream To Pimp A Butterfly on all platforms, so you have no excuse.
The Weeknd — After Hours
This past Friday, The Weeknd finally came through and dropped his highly anticipated album After Hours. Even though it’s a different vibe from his past projects, the album successfully manages to get his fans deep in their feelings. With vocals and runs like his, it would be difficult not to, am I right? 14 tracks might not be enough for us to cry and scream the lyrics out to, but it’s cool. It’s FINE, we’re Fine. Whether you’re looking for a 70’s type of feel (Blinding Lights) or his signature sound (After Hours), you won’t regret lending your ears to The Weeknd’s new album.

Rich The Kid — ‘Red’
Rich The Kid released the music video for his single ‘Red,’ which is one of the many fire tracks from his recently dropped album BOSS MAN. We recommend you to check the album out if you’re in love with this track, as BOSS MAN features many other bops with some of your favorite rappers (DaBaby, Post Malone, Lil Baby, and more)! Now working with Republic Records, we can expect a lot more music and other news from Rich The Kid. Remember when ‘New Freezer’ took over radios? We’re sure that he can hold an even stronger effect on the airwaves with his new music now.
LVRN, Manny Norte, 6LACK, Rema & Tion Wayne — ‘4AM’
LVRN (Love Renaissance) collaborates with Manny Norte, 6LACK, Rema, and Tion Wayne to create ‘4 AM.’ The UK-born, but of Ghanaian descent, is not only an artist, but he is also a host, producer, and DJ. Spring break may be canceled this year (on that note, wash your hands and stay inside), but that doesn’t mean you can’t vibe in your living room! Or have hope for Summer 2020! Either way, this R&B-fused afro-beat is a must-have on your party playlist!

Kahri 1K — ‘When They See Us’ ft. Quando Rondo
Kahri 1K dropped the music video for his single ‘When They See Us,’ which features fellow rapper Quando Rondo. Throughout the video, we get an inside look at the realities of his community (he is from Petersburg, Virginia). Rapping about struggles and violence, Kahri uses his music video to tell a story. Being Pusha-T’s first signed artist, it is clear that Kahri has the potential to become the next Youngboy Never Broke Again.
Tiana Major9 — ‘Collide’ (Acoustic)
R&B artist Tiana Major9 releases the acoustic version of her single ‘Collide.’ The original version of the song is a vibey, catchy beat that features the rap duo EARTHGANG. Although they are not featured on the acoustic version, you’ll still receive some love from Tiana with her soothing vocals. ‘Collide’ was one of the leading singles off of the Queen & Slim soundtrack (which is an amazing movie by the way), as the music video accumulated over 3 million views. If you love what you heard from above, you can stream the original version of the song here!

Mikhala Jene — ‘Lyin 2 My Friends’
Rising R&B singer Mikhala Jene performs her song ‘Lyin 2 My Friends’ on the Escape Tracks Live Sessions to honor Women’s History Month. To say that she did an amazing job would be an understatement, right? We can’t wait to hear what else a beautiful voice like hers can do, and we’re adding The North Carolina native was discovered by Deputy, the GRAMMY-nominated producer. Since then, she released her debut album Carolina Blues and gathered over 2 million plays on Soundcloud and over 350k streams on Spotify after touring with Dreamville artist Ari Lennox. You go, girl!
James Vickery — ‘Spanish Rose’
British Soul/R&B artist James Vickery performs her single ‘Spanish Rose’ live from The Rivoli Ballroom in London. Throughout the entire performance, we had heart eyes. The opening with the strums of his guitar, with his and the back-up vocals blending, it was everything. James Vickery also performed a session on COLORS, which is just as satisfying to the ears as this session. If you’re looking to hear more from him, he is releasing his new EP on March 25th, so mark the date on your calendar!
Chynna Lewis — ‘Mind and Soul’
Born in Taiwan, but raised in Canada, R&B/Soul artist Chynna Lewis releases her debut single ‘Mind and Soul.’ She went from singing with her musical family and writing music in her room at 15 to starting a career in the music industry– Talk about hustle! Featuring a catchy beat and breath-taking vocals, ‘Mind and Soul’ should be added to a playlist you can vibe to on a late-night (After all, that’s the job of all R&B, am I right?). If you’re in love with the song like we are, you can stream it on both Spotify and Soundcloud!
Raquel Lilly: ‘Fuccboi’
Indie-soul artist Raquel Lilly releases her single ‘Fuccboi,’ which describes the complications of dating and relationships in today’s society. With her sassy yet soulful vocals, Raquel Lilly is jumping from the Twitch world to the music industry, as she holds a platform there as well. Her debut album I’m Leaving is coming very soon, which will consist of 8 tracks about a young adult’s highs and lows as they go through their 20s. If you love ‘Fuccboi’ and want to hear more, be sure to keep up with her on Spotify and be on the lookout for her album!
MAETA — ‘Too Good’ / Do Not Disturb EP
Maeta’ s new single ‘Too Good’ is TOO good for you not to hear. It’s the final video in the series for her debut EP, and it doesn’t disappoint. A great single with an even greater video, showing off her sultry confident vocals and smooth dance moves against a soulful beat. Maeta is bringing back the old school R&B vibe and feel. Her new EP Do Not Disturb is out now on all platforms, and consists of 6 tracks– all of which she released beautiful visuals for. Give our girl Maeta some love with her new project; her talent is undeniable, and she deserves nothing but the best.
