With three consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, 5SOS broke records in the music industry. The band’s Youngblood album had them up against steep competition; The Carters. However, 5 Seconds of Summer fans will work hard to make sure that their boys get their rightfully deserved spot. After the band beat out Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia for UK No. 1, the race was on to overcome The Weeknd’s After Hours for the No. 1 spot on the USA Billboard 200.
Earlier within the release week, 5SOS’ CALM was sent out by mistake and a couple of lucky fans would get their hands on the album early. It was then determined that 10,000 copies would be removed from the band’s total unit amount, which ultimately prevented them from gaining No. 1 in the US.
Similar mistakes have happened within the music industry, with artists in the likes of Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Zayn Malik, and One Direction. None of these artists were penalized for the mistakes of a clerical error. This error did not reflect on the artist’s charting status on their debut week. Most of these artists paired with Ticketmaster to release albums to any ticket holders with no additional cost.
The Big Picture
The problem was made aware to the band and to the ticket company when fans were receiving their albums the week before it would be officially released. Leaks popped up online and fans worked tirelessly to report them, wanting to wait until release day to share their first listening experience with the people who made the album. The albums arriving earlier would prove to be the least of the band’s problems, the greater situation at hand now being the fact that Billboard has decided to remove 10,000 copies from their total units sold.
The choice to withhold albums from their debut week sales has cost the band their fourth No. 1 debut album, and ultimately ends their historical streak. 5SOS lost a rightfully deserved No. 1 spot out to The Weeknd, who while also deserves to be recognized for his work, has had his spot at No. 1 following his release week. With the technicality of the 10,000 copies withheld, the band would have had a 7,444 copy lead; which would have landed them their fourth No. 1 album with CALM.
So where does this leave the band? With an angry group of fans that are willing to fight for what they believe is right. The fans have taken to Twitter to show their outrage, tweeting Billboard and trending the hashtag #BillboardCountThe10K worldwide. It seems like they won’t be settling with second place, determined to right this wrong – whatever it takes.
Change.org and 5SOS
Longtime fan and supporter of the band, Sam Schulkes, took to Change.org to start a petition. Schulkes says, “I saw Michael’s reaction to the count and I immediately wanted to do something to change it. I couldn’t imagine having something like that ripped away from them. This isn’t us saying Abel (The Weeknd) doesn’t deserve it, this is about making something right.” The petition urges Billboard to reconsider the count for the band’s debut week and it seems as though they won’t hear the end of it until something is done.
The petition at the time of writing this has just over 13,000 signatures from fans all across the world who refuse to let their favorite band suffer at the hands of a third party. The petition urges fans and supporters to sign, writing, “There have been several instances where other artists’ albums were released early and it did not affect their place on the Billboard 200 chart during their debut. 5 Seconds of Summer have debuted at number one for every previous album they’ve released. The difference between 5 Seconds of Summer’s CALM and The Weeknd’s After Hours is 2,556 units sold, a number that 5 Seconds of Summer surpassed with the 10,000 physical copies.”
Andy DeLuca, the band’s photographer, showed his support underneath the petition with his comment, “I am on the right side of musical history.”
Fans are determined to make things right with the band and with their placement on the Billboard 200. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t have a little bit of fun in doing so. If one thing is certain, these fans won’t back down and refuse to not be seen and heard. They are at the forefront of this movement, coming together and standing for a cause that they believe in wholeheartedly.
Possibly the band’s biggest supporter, Crystal Leigh, fiancé of guitarist, Michael Clifford, took to Twitter to voice her outrage. She’s never backed down from standing up for what she believes in, and she’s not about to start now. Leigh makes her stance on the issue clear, and will continue supporting the band just as she had been doing throughout release week.
