Fresh Music Friday: Yungblud, Avril Lavigne, GOT7, and more!

Welcome to Fresh Music Friday; where every week we at The Honey POP will be giving you the lowdown on this week’s sweetest releases! Here’s your chance to see what your faves have been up to as well as discover some new music which you can easily fall in love with.

‘Weird’ – Yungblud

Yungblud shares his new single ‘Weird,’ in a time where the world couldn’t be any more strange. Despite having a chorus that is relevant to the current world around us, this song was written before the quarantine life we are currently living in. Built around off the wall beats, precise guitar work, and soulful vocals from our boy Yungblud, this track is straight-up relatable. “I wrote the song about the weirdest time in my life ever imagined,” says Yungblud. “I felt like the ground beneath me was a maze that was shapeshifting, and I felt like I was going to fall down the cracks and, in my opinion, the world feels exactly like that right now. I wanted this song to make everyone feel.” Boy, are we feeling.

‘Oh, What a World 2.0 (Earth Day Edition)’ – Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves releases ‘Oh, What a World 2.0 (Earth Day Edition)’, and dedicated the track to our planet and all of the front line heroes showing up for us daily during this global pandemic. An absolutely beautiful reimagined version of the song, paired with calming vocals of Musgrave, it’s simply magical. Celebrating the natural world around us and the beauty of human spirit, it’s undoubtedly uplifting in a time like this. Trying to find a balance as the uncertainty of the world makes us feel down, this song helps to lift our spirits up.

If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) – The 1975

There is something bout Matt Healy‘s voice (everything) that makes us melt right out of our seats. Things are no different with the release of The 1975‘s release of ‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know). This song makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. We’re not sure if it’s the lyrics or the soulful sounds of the band, but either way, WE LIKE IT. This song is just more proof that The 1975 is as versatile as ever. Now that we’re back in our seats, they’ve put us on the edge of them as we wait patiently for the release of the album.

‘We Are Warriors’ – Avril Lavigne

‘We Are Warriors’ is brought to us by Avril Lavigne in light of this new war we are all facing. In Avril’s eyes, we have overnight had to put on our armor and go into the unknown. “Like Vikings, we’ll be fighting through the day and night We’ll be marching through the darkness till the morning light Even when it’s harder like the armor you will see us shine No we won’t stop and we won’t drop until the victory’s ours”. This virus is just like a war. Day and night we are at it and wondering what tomorrow will hold, but we will survive. ‘We Are Warriors’ and all the proceeds from this song will be going to Project Hope. The song paints the perfect image of a sepia battleground in slow motion as Avril sings. A true battle anthem and one you should get your hands on. Fresh Music Friday approved!

‘Not By The Moon’ – GOT7

GOT7 are back with their new EP ‘DYE’ and the lead single, ‘Not By The Moon‘ sounds like heaven. It starts off seeming like a usual pop ballad, but this song becomes so much more once the powerful chorus starts. This song takes you away to a dream world when you listen, and it’s hard to pinpoint a favorite part. Maybe it’s the way Jinyoung and Jackson’s sweet vocals draw you in, or the power that JB and Yugyeom have in the chorus. Or perhaps it’s the back and forth between Mark and BamBam’s lines and Youngjae’s killer high note. Truthfully, it is all the above. Each member’s vocals blend beautifully together to form a sound that gives you instant chills. This song is delivered in a way that only GOT7 can provide, and it has been on repeat here at Fresh Music Friday since it dropped.

Petals For Amor II – Hayley Williams

With so much anticipation for Hayley Williams‘s new album Petals For Armor, we at Fresh Music Friday love what Hayley is doing. Releasing smaller EPs, we have part one but on April 21st the last of 5 songs that make up Petals For Armor II dropped with Hayley announcing the last part will be released with the full album on May 8th. The newest song to be added is called ‘Dead Horse’ which is accompanied by previously released ‘My Friend’, ‘Over Yet’, ‘Rose?Lotus/Violet/Iris’ and ‘Why We Ever’. The last song ‘Dead Horse’ starts with a little intro note from Hayley about depression.

We can tell this song with definitely be a dark horse. The song is fun and tumbling like a circus night while the lyrics speak nothing but the truth. All the downs that could happen in life are right here and “beat [it] like a dead horse”. We recommend you grab a listen now and get excited about May 8th. That’s what we’re doing, so excuse us while we put this song on repeat a few more times.

‘Claws’ – Charli XCX

‘Claws’ by Charli XCX is now an earworm as of April 23rd. Twinkling, robotic on the fritz music greets our ears. As Charli XCX starts singing her voice is robotic and heavily processed which fits in perfectly to the little world within the song. It’s catchy, creative, and fun. The lyrics are simple but paint and vivid picture “Party time Hop inside We’re so high Rollercoaster ride Gemini Switching sides, yeah That’s so nice” steadily walking you through feelings, emotions, and moments. Get a listen in before you’re left behind!

‘Good Job’ – Alicia Keys

What is a more serene combination than Alicia Keys’ pipes and a piano? That’s right friends, not a damn thing. A voice so powerful it alone could bring a tear to your eye—another song to remind the world that we need each other. The lyrics convey a sense of hope to those who are down on themselves and tells them how much others rely on them. Accompanied by flawless piano playing, this song is unbelievably powerful.

‘Machine’ – Miquela featuring Teyana Taylor

Our favorite robotic artist is back with a hot new track for our isolation playlists! Miquela has teamed up with R’n’B queen Teyana Taylor to drop the slow and sensual that’s sure to get you in the groove in the middle of the makeshift dancefloor of your living room or to lust over someone you’re crushing pretty hard on. Both Miquela and Teyeana’s vocals blend so well creating harmonies that are simply *chef kiss* Definitely one that deserves a place on your slow jams playlist.

The Voicenotes – Alaina Castillo

A sweet acoustic guitar accompanies Alaina Castillo in her new song The Voicenotes. Like dewy sun drops on an early morning the music picks up and stretches its metaphorical arms. This song is sleeping in and hiding away. A fear gnawing at your gut while you try to paint on a normal act. Emotions are scary and we all have felt it. Face your anxious fears and dive into The Voicenotes EP.

‘Dancer’ – Mali-Koa

There’s a new song ‘Dancer’ by Mali-Koa that dropped this week and we at Fresh Music Friday are in love. Not only do we get the song but we get a music video too. This song shows off Mali-Koa’s voice. The lyrics are encouraging. Everyone has had that moment where they feel self-conscious or unsure but in the words of Miss Mali-Koa “You can dance, you can dance, you can dance, You don’t have to be a dancer You can ask, you can ask, you can ask You don’t have to have the answers”. You can be anything and do anything just feel the music and enjoy yourself. The beats are perfect to dance to, so go check out some dance moves and do some dancing yourself! Embrace it, love.

Spit It Out – Solar (MAMAMOO)

Solar of Mamamoo has made her solo debut this week with her album Spit It Out. The lead single for this debut is the track of the same name this song is a whole vibe. The song has a mix of many music styles, which you can hear in the Latin guitar playing in as well as the electronic music you hear that works well with her vocals. This combination offers a sound that is unique to Solar and makes her solo song stand out. It’s a song that makes you want to dance, which we can all use right now.
