Man Overboard has been an indispensable addition to the pop-punk community since 2008. Absolute veterans of the genre this band has coined a brand of upbeat poppy-punk, lyrics that break your heart all over again, and just the slightest (but perfect) amount of edge. Plus, they are some of the most genuine and sweetest dudes we’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Defending pop-punk has been their mission for over a decade, so the announcement of their hiatus in 2016 broke our ever so sensitive hearts. Luckily for us, they just couldn’t put down the punk jumps and returned to the scene in the summer or 2018 with a 10-year anniversary tour. Now, they’ve put out a new single for us to enjoy during the world’s current hiatus. So in honor of all things beautiful, and Man Overboard, we celebrate them with five songs that pop-punk just couldn’t do without.
1. ‘Love Your Friends, Die Laughing’
‘LYDL’ is number one for all the most obvious reasons. It’s one of those songs that just reminds you that everything is fine, even if it’s only for the two-minutes and twenty-one seconds the song lasts. Friends, young love, and bringing back memories you didn’t even realize were there. This one will go down in history as one of pop-punk’s favorite songs of all time.
“When Man Overboard started, they were loved immediately. Watching a bunch of hardcore kids sing along to ‘LYFDL’ really made them unique. They fit in on any bill. If you were around in the beginning, you knew those guys from the bands they were in before, but we all knew Man Overboard was something special.”
Matthew, Longtime fan and friend of the band
It’s mid-July, Warped Tour, sunburned, and unsure if the sweat dripping down your face is from you or person next to you. You’re starting to grow impatient, as you’ve had to hold down your spot against the barrier threw countless bands you don’t even like. Your favorite band comes out. They start playing this song. All is well in the world.
If you know Man Overboard, then you know ‘Rare’ and screaming your heart out when they sang the line “You’re so worth all of this torture” at their shows. I remember my older brother showing me this song when I was in high school and how that song started it all for me. Man Overboard’s albums became my anthem all throughout high school and I even formed friendships built around their music. 3. ‘Dead End Dreams’
This one is here to remind us that pop-punk will never die. Good old fashion, New Jersey boys. Nothing better than a break-up song, which is especially respected in this genre. We’ve all felt out of place in this world, and this song reminds us we’ve all got the same shit going on. In addition this video is epic, because Man O live is something special all itself.
‘Montrose’ had to make it onto this list. All because this song says all the things we want to say but can’t. Another Warped Tour favorite, this song gives you a sense of youthful nostalgia, making you want to dance. An anthem for all the girls chillin’ looking hot in their beds smoking pot, and all the boys who are hopelessly in love with them.
5. ‘Where I Left You’
Okay, guys, this video/song combo is straight-up adorable, we don’t care who you are. It just makes sense that the combination of the dual vocals here blends just so perfectly. Another Man O song that just has that feel-good-quality. Plus, the end of this song doesn’t ask you to get off your feet but makes you.
‘Where I Left You’ holds a special place in my heart. It was the first song I heard from Man Overboard… yes, I know I was way late to the game, but I instantly fell in love with this band. I remember my sister coming to show me the music video, and it naturally putting a smile on my face. It’s one of those songs that gets you so excited you just want to dance or jump up and down in a crowd full of people
