The Perfect Listening Material! Here’s The Honey POP’s Top 20 Albums of 2020 So Far…

Can you believe we’re halfway through the year? It feels like only yesterday we were listing off the albums we were really looking forward to listening to. This year hasn’t been the year we had all expected, but one thing that’s been consistent and has helped many of us cope with is music. With six months down, we thought now would be the perfect time to reflect and share The Honey POP’s top 20 albums of 2020 so far…

Walls – Louis Tomlinson

It’s been a long time coming but hand on heart, we can honestly say it was well worth the wait for Louis’s debut album. The first full-length project from the Doncaster lad gave fans an inside to his more emotional and vulnerable side, a contrast from the straight-talking, comedic man we’ve all grown to know and love. The album features Tomlinson‘s signature Brit-pop/rock sound that glimmered through in the later One Direction albums and has a nice balance of upbeat bangers and more solemn ballads, with no skips at all.

Chromatica – Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga came back to the music scene this year with her fierce, powerful and infectiously catchy energy, Chromatica displays all the things we love about Gaga with tracks like ‘Alice,’ ‘Rain On Me’ featuring Ariana Grande and ‘Sour Candy’ featuring BLACKPINK. Tbh there is not a bad track on this album. We’re so stoked she is back and we hope we get to see her live soon!

Map of the Soul: 7 – BTS

We’ve seen a lot of growth and development in BTS‘s albums so far and Map of the Soul: 7 is no exception. With tracks like their lead single ‘ON’ offering a more mature and new sound for the group, ‘Interlude: Shadow’, ‘UGH!’ ‘Respect’ and ‘Outro: Ego’ offer throwback to their origin full of edge. This record offers a lot in terms of content and diversity, meaning there never really is a dull moment when listening to this masterpiece!

Rare – Selena Gomez

If you didn’t stan Selena before 2020 you were missing out, but Rare is most certainly a standout album from Gomez. The collection does not have a bad song. It’s an all round blessing to the eardrums, with songs like ‘Boyfriend,’ ‘Vulnerable,’ and ‘Kinda Crazy’ being our faves!

CALM – 5 Seconds of Summer

Four albums in and we still cannot get enough of 5SOS. CALM really sees the band finding their feet and comfort in their current sound. Gone are the days of pop-punk rebellion which is replaced with the more mature pop synth and anthemic melodies full of 80s revival. This record is the perfect example of 5SOS coming a long way from their humble YouTube beginnings. These four lads from down under have done nothing but blossom while perfecting their craft.

Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa

Dua has created something extremely special with Future Nostalgia and we cannot get enough of it. It is just one of those albums that you continually revisit, and with the catchy pop bops that she creates, it’s not hard to see why. The overall mood and vibe of the album is something you didn’t know you needed but now that you have it, you’ll never want to let go!

Heartbreak Weather – Niall Horan

We were whisked away on a whirlwind journey of the emotions endured during a breakup with Niall‘s sophomore album. His soulful vocals accompany us through the storytelling of the emotions poured out from a broken heart while offering a variety of sounds such as the 1D-esque ‘Black and White’, the rockier ‘Nice To Meet Ya’ and the cherubic ballad ‘Dear Patience’. The album offers a variety in sound and showcases Niall’s capabilities, proving he’s no one-trick pony.

MORE & MORE – Twice

At long last, we have been blessed with TWICE‘s latest project! The KPOP girl group showcased a more dark and mature concept without letting go completely of their trademark demeanor in MORE & MORE. With signature upbeat playful tunes such as ‘Oxygen’ and ‘Sweet Summer Day’ mixed with somber tracks such as ‘Shadow’ and ‘Don’t Call Me Again’, the album is the perfect concoction of growth while not shying away from the spirited and sprightly sound we love from the girls. We can’t get enough!

Notes on a Conditional Form – The 1975

Anything The 1975 create seems to become vocal gold and Notes On A Conditional Form is no exception to this. This collection was eagerly anticipated for 2020 and is just like previous projects from the band, one that you can blissfully listen to at any place at any time. It’s powerful, moving and we cannot wait to see how some of the tracks translate to a live performance. Hopefully, in the near future!

Manic – Halsey

Manic acts as an autobiographical depiction of Halsey as it illustrates the mind of a twenty-something-year-old yearning for love and affection. The album a more in-depth view of the woman behind the Halsey persona which Ashley Nicolette has built over the years. The eclectic sound of the record is confirmation that Halsey is a chameleon in that she can adapt to any genre and smash it. The eclectic album has a lot to offer such as the rock components of ‘3AM’ and the country vibes of ‘You Should Be Sad’ – this is arguably Halsey’s best work to date and an album we’re still adding to our heavy rotation even months after its release.

Changes – Justin Bieber

As loyal Bieber fans, we were stoked to get new music in 2020. This collection has definitely kept the fandom fed and show growth and may be considered an underrated album from the Biebs in years to come. While many favor older projects from Justin, this album surprised us, in a good way!

The Dream Chapter: Eternity – Tomorrow X Together

In the third installment of The Dream Chapter series, ‘Eternity’ sees Tomorrow X Together take a dark and introspective turn while seeing the group continuing to grow, with the lead single ‘Can’t You See Me?’ full of teenage angst and ‘Maze in the Mirror’ showcasing their progression as artists, with all members co-writing the track. From euphonious ballads to feet stomping bops, this album really shows how far TXT has come in just the space of a year and we are oh so proud!

Wake Up, Sunshine – All Time Low

As huge All Time Low fans at THP, we were so hyped for this album and it has not disappointed with one insanely great bop after another this album will be on our playlists throughout the rest of 2020 and it will be mindblowing to see them perform more tracks from it when they tour again!

How I’m Feeling Now – Charli XCX

Charli XCX dropped How I’m Feeling Now last month, and we had high hopes and it exceeded them. With tracks like ‘Forever,’ ‘Detonate’ and ‘Party 4 u’ being our faves, we couldn’t look on the opposite end of the spectrum and say what songs suck because there is not one bad song. This album has something for everyone and we recommend you check it out, like, yesterday!

NCT #127 Neo Zone – NCT 127

NCT 127 dropped their sophomore album this year and we were really in for a treat. With tracks like ‘Dreams Come True’ paying homage to ’90s R&B, while ‘Elevator’ is a funk-pop track which boasts upbeat tempos that are sure to get you grooving. The vocals – whether singing or rapping – blend effortlessly together with the eclectic use of instruments making for a euphonic record. Just like all their comebacks, NCT 127 is consistent with their craft in terms of distinctions yet still manage to be experimental. It’s truly everything!

Velvet – Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert is a vocal powerhouse of our generation. Velvet displays this with incredible energy, iconic instrumentals, and chilling vocals. With songs like ‘Superpower’, ‘Roses’ featuring Nile Rodgers, and ‘Love Don’t’, Velvet may arguably be an album of this entire decade, not just 2020!

Treasure Epilogue: Action to Answer – ATEEZ

One thing to know about this album is that ATEEZ sure knows how to make a jam-packed album. In this perfect ending to the Treasure series, Action to Answer offers a strong start with the opening ‘Answer’ is full of energy with fierce vocals and marching beats. The variety of style in a mini album is impressive, with ‘Horizon’ being an EDM-laced trap fest, the perfect club song, while ‘Star 1117’ exhibits their vocal abilities as they interpret heartbreak and earnest emotions to lyrics which are sure to capture your feelings. This album is proof that the fast-growing hype around these boys is deserved and we look forward to seeing where their journey takes them next!

Petals For Amour – Hayley Williams

What Hayley has done with Petals For Amour is truly beautiful. It is a big step away from what you will have heard from her in Paramore and as much as we adore Paramore, this collection is a masterpiece of exquisitely pretty and mind-blowing lyrics. To not check this out, is to quite simply be missing out!

Listen to the album here

Fantasia X – Monsta X

Monsta X dropped their eighth mini-album this year and it’s full of explosive energy and feel-good vibes. With songs like the attitude-filled ‘Fantasia’ and the contrasting power ballad ‘Flow’, the album sees their vocals truly shine in all their glory, proving that they can outdo themselves with every comeback. The album is charismatic — upbeat laced with a rap-heavy sound — all while offering poignant lyrics and imagery. We honestly expect nothing less!

After Hours – The Weeknd

After Hours isn’t just one of the best of 2020, it is arguably one of the best albums that have been released in a long time. The whole vibe of the album is incredible, slick and the production is insane. We don’t expect to see this album fall out of the charts anytime soon, it’s around for the long haul. And we’re not mad about it!
