Welcome back to The Rap Up, where we, at the Honey POP, give you the latest in terms of hip-hop and R&B! We had so much music to share with you all last week, and we think it is the same case for this week!
Let’s dive right in because the Rap Up will never let you down!
Beyoncé: ‘Black Parade’
Beyoncé dropped her new single ‘Black Parade’ in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement. Yet another upbeat track that shows appreciation and pride for African American men and women and their culture. This is yet another anthem that will have people up on their feet! Being black should not be a death sentence; it should instead be a celebration of diversity and culture, and that’s what Beyoncé wants to express through this new single. She also added links to her website that will direct her fans and followers to black-owned businesses. Check it out here!

John Legend: Bigger Love
The man we can always rely on for a good jam, from an upbeat and heart-lifting tune to a somber, love song, is back with yet another fantastic album! John Legend released his new album Bigger Love, which surrounds around the idea that love will always win. The sound of this album contrasts the sound of his past project Darkness and Light but still manages to deliver a message that we all need to hear right now. John Legend told Apple Music, “These songs are about joy, hope, and resilience. The power of the human spirit.”

J. Cole: Snow On Tha Bluff
J. Cole gave his fans a surprise drop earlier this week titled ‘Snow On Tha Bluff.’ The release had caused a lot of controversy, as many believed that he was shading female rapper and activist NoName and expected for people to educate others that might not know a lot in regards to black history and systemic racism. Cole himself tweeted about the rumors and backlash he was receiving, saying that he stood by his words and even encouraged fans to follow and support NoName.

Anderson .Paak: ‘Lockdown’
Anderson .Paak released his new single ‘Lockdown’ in response to the riots and protests happening all over the world. The song discusses the truth of what happens at protests and the events that take place as well. Most news channels have stopped covering protests, and when they do cover it, they only show what they want the people to see. Paak breaks down what really goes during protests: how things turn left and how the true colors of certain officers and people are shown. Not to mention, many more black lives were lost: Rashard Brooks and the five black men who have been lynched in the same week (but have been covered as suicides), just to name a few.

Teyana Taylor: The Album
Teyana Taylor released The Album this past Friday! Containing many meanings and emotions within the project, she separated the project into 5 sections or “Studios.” Using the same letters to spell out “album,” the five studios consist of love, sexuality, self-worth/confidence, vulnerability, and striving for success. The first two tracks, ‘Intro’ and ‘Come Back To Me,’ are especially filled with love, as they both involve the birth and growth of their family. Let’s not forget the vocals she serves throughout, though! Not that we’re surprised, but her voice is beyond beautiful.

Wale: The Imperfect Storm
Wale released his new EP The Imperfect Storm. The EP is excellent, and all fans of Wale can second to this. Cohesive and consistent, the project starts off with an upbeat track once again regarding the protests and riots going on in the country (‘MOVIN’ DIFFERENT’). Full of Afro-beats and songs that are perfect for the summer, this EP deserves to be streamed on every single platform. Period.

Black Fortune: OSSHLORD
Rising rapper Black Fortune dropped his highly anticipated mixtape OSSHLORD. If you read last week Rap Up, he released ‘Bankrupt,’ which is featured on the project. The 14-track project really demonstrates how much potential Black Fortune has of becoming a mainstream rap artist. His sound could be described as a mixture of the chill, smooth vocals from Bryson Tiller, and the flow of Young Thug. Definitely keep Black Fortune in your sight!

Bren Joy: ‘Freezing’
If you’re a fan of Anderson .Paak or Bruno Mars you’ll love Bren Joy, as he blends R&B, jazz, gospel, and pop into his tracks! He recently dropped his new single ‘Freezing:’ a song that will lift your spirits and will brighten your day. “‘Freezing’ is about taking the initiative. It’s about taking a leap of faith into what you want to be and achieve.” Joy speaks on the track I want my fans to take away that too much is never enough.

Courtnie: ‘What’s Up’
Prepare to be lifted up and grounded again with the smooth vocals of Courtnie! Her latest tune is called ‘What’s Up.’ Perfectly capturing long fun-filled summer nights, we can’t help but get lost in these beats. We can only hope and wonder what kind of video might come of this song. ‘What’s Up’ is the true summer tune for your playlist. So go listen to Courtnie and thank us later.

Detroit native Black Noi$e announces his new album “Oblivion.” With rapper Earl Sweatshirt on his team, nothing can go wrong! On ‘The Band,’ you hear Liv.e’s soulful voice over a jazzy beat. It’s his debut release on Earl Sweatshirt’s Tan Cressida/Warner Records and the label’s first non-Sweatshirt release. A release date for “Oblivion” has yet to be set.

Last, but certainly not least, is Bayou! He released his third single ‘Alone.’ Dubai-based, but born in Egypt, the artist combines many elements into his music. We love how he stays true to where he comes from, as he includes sounds that stay true to his culture. His relaxing, silky vocals are something no one can afford to sleep on!
