From a comeback with GOT7, to his solo music and the recent launch of his clothing label, Team Wang Designs, Jackson Wang has found himself incredibly busy in 2020. He has kept this momentum going with the release of a new song titled ‘Pretty Please’ with DJ duo Galantis. The song was released with 88rising, a mass media company that focuses on giving positive representations to Asians within America. Released Friday at midnight, fans were in for something special with ‘Pretty Please,’ and we have been left pretty impressed.
Inspired by Hong Kong movies of the 90s’, the music video is not what you may expect when you first hear ‘Pretty Please.’ The EDM beats may not be your typical theme song for a love story (which was done intentionally according to the behind-the-scenes interview that Jackson gives at the end of the video). But these beats that Galantis give us are not only amazing, but does go along with the theme for this video it an intriguing way.
Many may have been expecting the Rap verses and deep bass that Jackson is known for, often giving off a hard exterior. But real fans of Jackson know that he has many sides to him, and these many sides are ones we see being depicted in this video. We get to hear his sultry vocals, which paired with the EDM/Pop track, work wonderfully.
The music video, which Jackson directed and produced, offers us many things; a clear theme, smooth choreography, and an overall pleasing aesthetic with a song we can’t get out of our heads. It takes you through the classic love story trope; boy sees girl, boy chases after girl, boy impresses girl, but does the boy really get the girl? It’s an ending that leaves the storyline open for more. Will we perhaps get a continuation of this in future music videos, since Jackson has been hinting at another album to fans for quite some time? We’ll just have to wait and see.
For Jackson Wang, the concept of ‘Pretty Please’ works, and it works very well. It’s different, but a good different, and a different we would love to see Jackson explore more of.
