Song Machine Coming Live To The Airwaves: Make Sure To Don Those Tinfoil Hats

Song Machine Coming Live To The Airwaves: Make Sure To Don Those Tinfoil Hats

Song Machine, by Gorillaz, has been a quiet centerpiece to our musical world this year. A compelling escape from the drudgery and mire that is 2020. We began the year with Episode 1 ‘Momentary Bliss’ ft slowthai and Slaves. We’re now six episodes deep into this innovative pursuit brought to you by our favorite animated band. Before we bring you the great news, let’s reminisce about the six songs we’ve received so far.

Episode 1

We are instantly straddling reality and the animated world, as they collide for this awesomely mind-bending moment of ‘Momentary Bliss.’ This played with the idea of combining reality and the world of cartoons. Light on the cartoons, relaxed even, this is what sets the tone for the rest of the songs we lay before you. Did it catch your attention?

Episode 2

With ‘Désolé,’ we got a taste of the far reaches, taking the reality-bending that one step further into the Gorillaz world we know and love. Strange things are happening, and surprise, surprise– Murdoc gets left behind. Just what is going on, and who is planning all this? Plus, we got to see the lovely Fatoumata Diawara express her multilingual talents.

Episode 3

Now our good friend ‘Aries’ was a shot of acid. We’re starting to bend reality now. The wonderful contributions of Peter Hook and Georgia just add to this wild scenery before our eyes. Heavily stylistic, taking us on a wild motorcycle ride through a town that’s zapped of color. Thankfully, the gang finally picks up poor Murdoc, who seems to have a syringe of what we hope is only truth serum. This was also accompanied by a message to wash your hands and be safe. Gotta love a band that cares.

Episode 4

Episode 4 is ‘Friday the 13th,’ which we have later found out it’s the 40th anniversary of the movie Friday the 13th. Halloween and politics– it’s the mood for 2020 honestly. This song features the chill Octavian. We’re vibing to the psychedelic video and meditative lyrics, as they pull on the heartstrings of issues we continue to face.

Episode 5

Produced by Prince Paul, Remi Kabaka Jr., and Gorillaz, and recorded in London just before lockdown, ‘PAC-MAN’ ft ScHoolboy Q debuted on the 40th anniversary of the old school video game. Pretty amazing since Friday the 13th also turns 40, looks like a possible trend? Is this a dedication to all the things of 40 years past… we digress. The lights and visuals pull us in. Speaking of anniversaries, Gorillaz turned 20 with a huge announcement shortly after this song. We’re no numerologist, but something seems to be cooking.

Episode 6

What do we need?
What do we hunger for?
Who holds the secrets, who will know?
Temples of greed
In ruins on the river bed
Wastelands that lived before the snow

This baby right here just premiered on September 9th, and we are stoked. ‘Strange Times’ featuring Robert Smith is just too damn apt for this year. We listen to the drone of a spoken word esque outer space adventure. We’ve taken the environment to the next level, looking to the stars for some kind of answer or destination. The dancing vibe has grabbed hold of our limbs, and we’ve nothing left in our heads but one desire…

It's you and I forever
We won't be afraid
Even if the stars are falling down
Down, down, down, down
Falling down

Be. The. Change.
