Earlier this week, NIKI released her debut album Moonchild. In a tweet, NIKI releases information about the album to celebrate the release of the masterpiece. She describes how the album was two years in the making and how she intended to make the album free of any constraints and expectations others had of her. The 10 track album includes her single, ‘Switchblade’, ‘Selene’, and ‘Lose’ which served as pre-releases to the album. The other tracks’ names are: ‘Wide Open (Forewood)’, ‘Nightcrawlers’, ‘Tide’, ‘Pandemonium’, ‘Plot Twist’, ‘If There’s Nothing Left…’ and ‘Drive On’.
The album is divided into three sections to represent the three phases of the moon and correlates the track’s emotions with it. As described on Apple Music, the first four tracks serve as tracks of wonder and optimism, the next three tracks serve as the loss of innocence while the final three tracks serve as resolutions. The songstress describes herself as a moonchild which resulted in this whimsical, dreamy album that is meant to guide one through the path of life. NIKI’s intoxicating and soulful voice carries the storytelling of the album while the contemporary R&B and indie-pop beats play out visually in your mind.
NIKI was born and raised in Indonesia and has been in the music scene for most of her adolescent life. When she was 15, she was the opening act for Taylor Swift’s The Red Tour in Jakarta after winning a competition arranged by Swift. In 2017, she moved to America to achieve her dreams as an artist and was shortly signed to 88rising, a mass media company dedicated to giving Asian artists positive representation in America. Before the release of Moonchild, NIKI had two EPs as well as a live album with multiple singles that were arranged by 88rising. Never one to conform to the typical standards, the rhythm that carries within her reassuring and soulful voice helps tell stories.
We’re enjoying how NIKI told her story of becoming an artist in Moonchild and wait to hear her next releases. The album is currently on repeat and we intend to keep it on for a while. A huge congratulations to NIKI and her debut album! It’s been two years in the making and we know you’re elated! The Honey Pop sends you major love!
