The day has finally come. BLACKPINK has blessed us with their first full-length album, THE ALBUM.
It has been a long road, but we’re finally here. After debuting in 2016 and taking over the world, BLACKPINK has finally released their first album. And the wait was definitely worth it. BLACKPINK released what is next to being pop perfection. Every single song is amazing. Not a single skip.
When the album was announced earlier this year, it seemed like a dream come through, so much that it was hard to believe. But from the moment they released the first pre-release single, ‘How You Like That’: there was no stopping BLACKPINK.
The trap-pop anthem earned the title of Song of Summer at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. At the time of its release, the music video broke several YouTube records, including the most viewed music video within the first 24 hours of its release and charted in 26 countries around the world.
Then came the second pre-release single, ‘Ice Cream.’ And this time, the song featured the one and only Selena Gomez. ‘Ice Cream‘ was a new sound for BLACKPINK and they absolutely owned it. The song debuted at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 making it the first BLACKPINK single to crack the chart’s top 20.
After the release of these two smash hit singles, everyone was getting ready for the even more anticipated album. And it did not disappoint.
One thing we can say about this album is that it overflows with confidence – and that’s something we love to see.
Songs like ‘Pretty Savage‘ and ‘Bet You Wanna‘ showcase the girls’ confidence, and they absolutely own it. When it comes to ‘Pretty Savage,’ the song is all about clapping back to haters, and needless to say, we’re here for it. ‘Bet You Wanna’ is a pretty chill and vibey song that will get stuck in your head. It seems to turn the table when it comes to what’s expected in lyrics. Whereas most songs talk about a partner making the singer happy, these girls sing “something about me is taking you higher.” And of course, this is the song that features one of the biggest artists right now, Cardi B.
‘Love To Hate Me‘ is more of a dance-pop song that counts with an addictive hook. However, the big highlight of the song is Lisa’s killer rap verse. Jisoo’s and Rosé’s vocals in the pre-chorus of the sixth track, ‘Crazy Over You,’ will absolutely blow you away. Especially because of how unexpected the drop is.
The album closes with ‘You Never Know.’ This is the slowest song in the album and by far the most emotional one. The arrangement of the song is very minimalized which emphasizes on the lyrics’ message. It carries a very important message for anyone that has been hated on in any way. All of the girls showcase their incredible vocals as they try to reassure themselves. There’s no way to not get chills down your spine when Jennie and Jisoo harmonize at the end of the chorus as they sing “the more I do Imma shine baby you know they ain’t got a shot on me.”
However, the big highlight of this whole album is of course the third single, ‘Lovesick Girls.’
Just by seeing the names of Jennie and Jisoo in the credits of the song, everyone had a feeling there was no way they would disappoint. For one part, the music itself mixes acoustic guitar with more electronic sounds and it makes it an absolute anthem. The emotion in their voices brings the song to life. The rap delivered by Lisa and Jennie brings the song up in the second verse. When it comes to ‘Lovesick Girls,’ you can’t miss the lyrics as they sing about toxic love. The lyrics are so raw and real that it surpasses any previous BLACKPINK song. They really outdid themselves.
The music video they released along with the single and THE ALBUM is absolutely mindblowing as well. The vibes, the lights and the editing fits the song perfectly. It gives off a similar vibe to the ‘Playing With Fire’ music video but this time it’s way more emotional and torturing. It also follows the storyline of the song throughout various scenarios. This also helps the overall feel of the song where you feel like in a movie. The visuals are insane, not only the setting but especially each and everyone of members.
This is by far one of their best title tracks and one of their best music video. They compliment each other so well to the point you’ll be watching and rewatching this music video until you know it by heart.
Later this month, they’ll release a Netflix documentary, Look Up In The Sky. It will reveal their journey behind their rise to stardom. BLACKPINK didn’t come to play when they released this absolutely amazing album. It seems to be like they’re ready to make this world their own.
