This is what we’ve been waiting for THP fam! It finally happened! Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber teamed up for the first time ever for the latest single ‘Monster,’ and we’ve got a new music to watch too! Here’s what we love about this mega collab!
The Deep Lyrics
‘Monster‘ is the second single released off of Shawn’s upcoming album Wonder, (we literally can’t wait to give it a listen) justly after the titled track, ‘Wonder‘ last month. Just like ‘Wonder,’ we’re absolutely obsessed with this new Shawn song, featuring the Biebs. No surprise, but ‘Monster’ is deep, and further explores the idea of Shawn’s struggle with stardom. In the opening verse, he reveals to us, “You put me on a pedestal and tell me I’m the best/ Raise me up into the sky until I’m short of breath.”
As one who also battled with fame and the consequences of being in the limelight, Justin also shares his own struggles in the second verse of ‘Monster.’ He reminds us that at fifteen, he began his journey in the music biz, and along the way to becoming a star he has been ridiculed for his actions. Ultimately, he has learned to forgive and tells us, “I had a chip on my shoulder, had to let it go/ ‘Cause unforgiveness keeps them in control.”
Together, Shawn and Justin echo each other’s fears in the chorus, pleading for someone to remind them to stay grounded if they step out of line. They harmonize, “What if I, what if I trip? / What if I, what if I fall? / Then am I the monster? Just let me know.”
The Aesthetic of the Music Video
Directed by Collin Tilley, the ‘Monster’ music video also stars our new favorite team as they sing on a makeshift stage at nightfall in the woods. The video stays in the same scene throughout its duration after we initially watch Shawn walk up the steps to the stage. As the video closes, it pans out, revealing that they are high above as if they are on a pedestal suggested in the reoccurring lyrics. The darken aesthetic of the video fits the mood of the song as the lyrics describe both Shawn’s and Justin’s fear of being a monster.
To celebrate the premiere of ‘Monster,’ the pair live-streamed on YouTube to discuss the single’s creation, working as a collab and cheekily announcing their America Music Awards (AMAs) performance happening this Sunday, November 22 at 8 pm PST/EST on ABC!
As your musical guides, we’re here to remind you that Wonder drops on December 4th via Island Records. Pre-orders are available now! Get your copy here!
