Mary J. Blige Re-Released My Life With Deluxe Edition for Anniversary

The legendary singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, is blessing our lives once again. With the 26th anniversary of her sophomore albumthe Queen herself has re-released her hit album My Life. In celebration, the album has three physical forms: a 2CD, a standard weight black double vinyl, and a triple vinyl edition in translucent blue with a lenticular cover. With the re-release, bonus tracks feature LL Cool J and Smif ‘N Wessun.

The Yonkers-raised singer generated a name for herself with her debut album, What’s the 411? with Sean “Diddy” Combs behind the board. Two years later, Blige released her most introspective, personal, and culturally impactful album of her career, My Life. If you didn’t know, this album created the hits ‘You Bring Me Joy’ and her version of Rose Royce’s 1976 soul classic ‘I’m Goin’ Down.’

Cultural Impact

My Life was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 1995. Rolling Stone has included the album on their 50 Essential Female Albums (#17), 100 Greatest Albums of the ’90s (#63), and 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (#279) lists.

In 2011, Blige released My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1), a clear-eyed extension of My Life that shot to No. 5 on the Billboard 200. In recent years, Blige has recorded various albums and duets, from Bono to George Michael. She has become an Oscar-nominated actor and even founded her own production company, Blue Butterfly. The intimate, 3x platinum My Life album stands alone as Blige’s document, as she struggled to see the light in the darkness.

My Life may have come out over 20 years ago, but the tracks are timeless and classics, combining soul influences with a contemporary hip-hop feel to create a fresh, bold sound, generated from the New Jack Swing Movement in the late ’80s to early ’90s. With the help of Combs, Chucky Thompson, and Price Charles Alexander behind the boards, it’s no wonder why Blige holds the title as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

Confirming her lasting impact on the industry, Amazon Studios announced last December; there is a yet-untitled Blige documentary in the works, produced by Sean Combs. Throughout the years, Blige became a global symbol of female empowerment and perseverance.
