We’re so close to getting Shawn Mendes’ new album Wonder that we can taste it. We’ve been waiting anxiously for this album since he announced its release, and now we get to hear some behind the scenes insight!
Shawn sat down with Zane Lowe over at Apple Music to discuss the story behind the album, his new approach to songwriting for Wonder, and what he’s learned from Justin Bieber and their collab, ‘Monster,’ which is out-of-this-world incredible, and if you haven’t heard it yet you’ve got to check it out right now!
Shawn Mendes On How He Approached Making His New Album Wonder Differently
“I always felt like I had to walk into a studio and command the room and be like, “This is what we’re going to do.” And I just walked into the studio and I looked at the writers and the people who I love and trust, and I just hung out and just sat there and tried my best to let it come. And it did. And I feel really lucky for that because I think the point of the creative genius thing is that sometimes it doesn’t come, but don’t get down on yourself when it doesn’t.”
He also discussed how learning to love himself changed his life and benefitted his relationship with Camila Cabello, the importance of honesty in their relationship, the silver linings of the pandemic, and how the stillness influenced the reflective new album.
Shawn Mendes On How Learning To Love Himself Benefitted His Relationship With Camila
“You can not be the best version of a son or a brother or a boyfriend or a friend to anybody if you’re not constantly there for you, and you’re watching out for you and you’re checking in on your heart and your space and your energy. And the closer you get to that clarity and that freedom within you, the more space you have for everybody else in your life. And I think that that was something that really happened over that period too, especially with Camila and I, is that we started giving ourselves a lot more time, which then allowed us to give everything more time and space, if that makes sense.”
Shawn Mendes On The Importance Of Self-Love
“Work on your self love as much as you’re working on your love for everyone else, more. Because the more you’re cool with you, and the more you love yourself, the better you’re going to be for the people in your life. And I said that earlier, I really do mean that. I think, this can be cheesy, it is what it is and it’s true and it helps, and it’s changed my life. And I have a journal I write in every day, and at the end of my journal, I sign off with, “Love you, man. Always got your back.” Those few words at the end of a little bit of reflection, remind me that like… Oh, even in this interview with you, if I say something stupid and you get uncomfortable and everyone gets uncomfortable and people inside are like, “Why’d you say that?” I’m going to get back to the house tonight and be like, “I did say I’d have my back. All right. It’s okay, I have my back.” That takes practice. And that’s an everyday thing. And I think that it’s so easy to be blindsided by the fact when someone is in love with you, and when you’re in a relationship that you’re forever protected until that thing gets taken away from you, like I said, I’d be alone and it would be the worst feeling in the whole world. And that’s why it’s so important for me to mention the amount of self-love practice that I have.”
Shawn Mendes On The Silver Lining of the Pandemic, Learning To Appreciate Stillness, and How It Influenced The Album
“The pandemic that’s happening and the isolation and the quarantine has been terrifying and really hard, but something really beautiful for me came out of it, which was, you’re not allowed to leave. Stillness. I went to Miami and I was living with Camila and her parents and her sister. And I was in panic for the first week being like, “There’s no way I’m going to make an album.” And then when I started to settle in to how nice it is to be in the same place every night, to have a movie time, to cook dinner with her family and to do laundry. I know it all sounds really silly, but when you’ve been touring the world since you were 15 years old, I don’t remember the last time I smelled laundry. It’s a nice smell. It’s a really calming smell.
It feels like growing up. That stillness brought a lot of anxiety to the surface that I had to work through. And on the other side of that was a real reflective period for me, where I could be like, “Oh, this is what I’ve been doing. This is crazy. This is what I can do. This is art. This is bigger than me.” It was the first time I had a chance to even think about someone more than me. It was the first time I had enough space in my heart and my head that wasn’t so consumed about how many people were caring about what I was doing or how many, whatever, likes, streams, whatever you want to call it. It was the first time I was quiet and I was able to be like, “What is happening in this world? And how do I feel about it and what can I do? And where does this go from here?
We love him so much and can’t express how excited we are for the release of Wonder. These are, of course, just some highlights that we thought were amazing! You can watch the partial interview down below or head on over to Apple Music to watch in full!
