Bending Genres and Ever-Evolving 5SOS Are Here to Stay

Bending Genres and Ever-Evolving 5SOS Are Here to Stay

Breaking records, awing fans, and putting their all into every single project, it’s no surprise that 5 Seconds of Summer have been going strong for nine years. But whenever we look at their past accomplishments the running joke that 5SOS are the “biggest band that no one’s ever heard of” shows true, as their songs are known through households worldwide but few know of the huge impact they have not only made in the music world but in their fans’ lives.

So, we here at THP thought we should bring light to the shining stars that make up 5SOS and the amazing things the band has accomplished in these nine years!

“Derping” since 2011, this four-piece band from Sydney, Australia made their names known on YouTube doing covers of popular songs and giving their growing fanbase a few original tracks before they were discovered by Louis Tomlinson, famed member of One Direction

The band was then asked to tour with the boyband (for two consecutive tours!), helping them gain recognition and multiply their fanbase around the world. And the rest was history, and when we say history we mean ‘Youngblood’ hitting 1 billion streams and the only band or artist to win an ARIA for song of the year three times, history.

And the best thing about this band is that they invited fans along for the ride. A statement that still stands true as the 5SOSFAM have seemed to almost grow up with the band, for those that have been there from the beginning. And, if you’re new, you can easily find your place on Twitter where the band makes a point to interact with their supporters!

Taking the “Long Way” Through 5SOS’s Musical Journey

Watching Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford, and Ashton Irwin get to where they are now have been a journey for all the 5SOSFam out there! Four studio albums, 2 live albums, and countless EPs and B-Sides later 5SOS’s sound has evolved and changed as naturally as the boys who performed them transformed into the stage gods we know them as today.

Described as pop-punk, pop, pop-rock, and anything in between, it can be hard to put your finger on the ever changing sound that the band continues to produce while still somehow sounding themselves and having that distinct 5SOS vibe.

The fact that the band’s musical tastes also highly vary helps with the influences you can hear in each era of their four albums. Their first studio album which was self-titled, 5 Seconds of Summer, had a heavy sound of influences from bands like All Time Low, Blink-182, and Nirvana to name a few. Their second album, Sounds Good Feels Good, followed a similar suit as the band continued to sport ripped skinny jeans, vans, and a hint of teenage rebellion.

After a slight break, the band came back at full force with their third studio album, Youngblood. This masterpiece brought the band to a new fanbase, as they blew up pop radio with the hit single of the same name, ‘Youngblood’. Fans saw a new more mature side to the fun-loving boys they all came to love and the band really pushed themselves to create something different but still so them.

This era brought more confidence in the band’s vocals, a whole song just for Calum Hood to show his versatility and talent (‘Babylon’ stans rise!), and an impeccable stage presence from the group during their Meet You There Tour!

Continuing with that streak 5SOS released CALM, their 4th studio album in March of this year, and despite the pandemic stopping a lot of things they had planned for its release, fans still took to the album like fish on a hook, and with bops like ‘Wildflower’ and ‘No Shame’ who could blame them. This album really encompassed just how talented this band is not only musically but vocally, as their harmonies fill the tracks and stay stuck in your head for hours.

Although fans are already anxiously awaiting the No Shame Tour that was postponed this year like so many others, the band has already started to tease 5SOS5 and with the growth of each album thus far, we are expecting to be none other than blown away.

The 5SOS Family

When we said the band’s connection with their fans is one of our favorite things about them, we weren’t kidding. From the beginning, the band has always expressed how close they feel to their fanbase and in the good ol’ days, they would live on the video platform Keek and constantly post about their day.

In 2014, they even had a whole fan convention planned out for some lucky fans where they got treated to live performances, meet-and-greets, costume parties, and tacos…a lot of tacos.

Since this era has been a lot different that the rest, the band has done all they can to stay connected, with them simply releasing a video of them dropping some “Quarantea” or giving us a full on breakdown of their most recent single.

We are loving the love 5SOS continues to show their fans, whether, through exclusive BTS content, funny videos or simply replying to a few tweets … and the connection they have with so many of their fans is unbreakable.

Breaking Charts and Winning Awards

Leaving marks on fans’ hearts and also the music industry, 5SOS keep reminding us that they didn’t come to play. Their single, ‘Youngblood’ made it to number one in the US’s Pop Songs chart and Adult Pop Songs chart. It also was certified 11x platinum in Australia, 2x platinum in the US and the UK, and platinum in Canada.

5 Seconds of Summer have also won BMI Awards for their songs, ‘Youngblood’, ‘Who Do You Love’ and ‘Easier.’ An ASCAP Award for ‘Youngblood’, an APRA for Outstanding International Achievement, an AMA and many others that we simply don’t have time to name.

And with all this under their wing, they also have collaborated with award-winning artists like Julia Michaels on an alternate version of ‘Lie to Me’, and The Chainsmokers on ‘Who Do You Love’. The last collaboration even lead to a countrywide tour where the band got to perform in front of a whole new genre of music fans!

Watching 5 Seconds of Summer transform musically, vocally, and as people in these nine years has been quite a ride and we are already buckling in to see what they have in store in the next era! But, no matter what genre they decide to bend next, we know it’s going to be a masterpiece.
