16 Songs To Introduce You To Kim Taehyung: An Idol Whose Songs Show Us His World

BTS’ Kim Taehyung, also known by his stage name V, is an idol who has captivated the hearts of millions and with every good reason. He has a personality and artistry that shines through, making it impossible (at least to us) not to fall for him. Today, we wanted to talk a little bit (actually, a lot) about Taehyung, and how amazing he is. We thought the best way to do this would be through BTS’ and his music because when words aren’t enough, music can speak and share everything we want to say. Come on this journey with us as we look back at some of the songs that Kim Taehyung has had a hand in creating and how they speak of his character and career.

‘Hold Me Tight’ (2015)

Released back in 2015, ‘Hold Me Tight’ was one of the first songs V co-wrote (alongside Slow Rabbit, Pdogg, RM, j-hope, and SUGA). This melancholy song is beautiful, giving us chills and feelings we can barely contain when listening. As his songwriting debut, V did an amazing job, delivering a track that fans still talk about to this day. Once you hear it, you won’t question why it’s a fan-favorite.

‘Boyz with Fun’ (2015)

Also, from the HYYH era, we have ‘Boyz with Fun,’ and along with SUGA, Pdogg, “Hitman” Bang, RM, and j-hope, V also contributed to the lyrics. It’s a contrast to the emotional song ‘Hold Me Tight,’ with its hip-hop beats. How can you listen to this song and not get hyped, especially when we hear V’s verse and ad-libs during j-hope’s verse. It’s a song that we haven’t forgotten about and the perfect song for when you need a pick-me-up.

‘Run’ (2015)

Okay, HYYH gave us so many memorable songs, if you haven’t noticed yet. The title track for BTS’ fourth mini-album, ‘Run,’ is no exception. This track featured the combination of V’s melody and Jungkook’s lyrics, and as we can see, the result is a title track with a legacy that lives on even five years later.

‘Stigma’ (2016)

“Are you calling me a sinner?” While many fans may know V’s first solo song on the Wings album for that iconic line, this song is so much more. There have been many fan theories over the years about this song’s meaning and how it ties back into the BTS universe presented in their MV’s (such as in ‘I Need U’). A song very much about needing to confess one’s ‘sins’ and sharing his struggles (perhaps between good and evil), V wrote this song that is deep in its meaning and showcases his vocal range. From sultry vocals to sweet falsettos, this solo song showed a side of V that would continue to evolve throughout several albums.

‘It’s Definitely You’ (2016)

‘It’s Definitely You’ highlights an important part of V’s career, his acting debut. This song that is a duet with fellow BTS member Jin was an OST for the historical K-drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. Staring in a supportive role for the series, V took to the small screen and delivered a performance that many will not forget. The song is one we recommend you add to your playlists, and the combination of these two vocals is heavenly.

‘Spring Day’ (2017)

The queen that will never die, ‘Spring Day’ is one of BTS’s most emotional and beautiful songs. It’s a fan-favorite song about longing and missing someone and means so much to both BTS and ARMY. After not performing it for three years, the boys performed it for ARMY during their Dear Class of 2020 performance, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and their online concert Bang Bang Bang Con: The Live; a song reflective of the current times as we wait for the spring day to arrive. There is a reason that it is the longest-charting song on the MelOn charts. And if you didn’t know, Taehyung has a version of the song that he created. While we only have a small 40-second demo, we hope one day to hear Taehyung’s full version of the iconic song because we already know that it will be a masterpiece.

‘4 O’ CLOCK’ (2017)

Released during FESTA 2017 for BTS’s fourth anniversary, this collaboration between V and RM is breathtaking. The song combines those deep vocals of V’s we love with RM’s raspy rap and vocals for a beautiful song. It reminds us a bit of ‘Hold Me Tight’ in that it gives us the same melancholy feeling, something we get a lot of from V’s songs. Featuring an acoustic guitar, it’s the soft-rock ballad that we didn’t know we needed till we heard it, and we love the nostalgic feelings we get every time we listen.

‘Singularity’ (2018)

While a few songs on this list had V’s hand in production, his solo song from Love Yourself: Answer was gifted to him by RM. For this song, watching the MV that goes along with it is a must. Not only does this jazz and r&b song show off V’s baritone vocals that he is known for, but the visuals that we get from this song make it one of the most iconic in the BTS discography. There is a lot to unpack, and many have dedicated papers, videos, etc., to understand the song’s full meaning. It’s a song that very much carries the message we saw in this chapter of the Love Yourself era; the idea of having a fake persona that you portray to not only others but yourself, and how toxic it can be. Taehyung makes ‘Singularity’ his, and we can’t picture anyone else being the voice and face behind such an essential piece of the BTS universe.

‘Scenery’ (2019)

The start of 2019 saw V releasing his first solo song outside of BTS. ‘Scenery’ is completely self-composed, heartbreakingly beautiful, and shows us how authentic he is when it comes to his craft. His creativity is unlike other artists, and he carries it with him, whether it’s with writing songs or through photography. We get more of this insight in the BTS documentary Break The Silence, where Taehyung shares the song’s making, including the struggles and wishes of being a songwriter. The song is Taehyung’s way of capturing the moments of his life, much like how he does with photography; it tells of how he spent his youth and how, as he reminisces about these moments with his photographs, he wants to capture those feelings and put them into his songs as well. Not only is this song a masterpiece, but it broke several SoundCloud records upon its release. If there was ever a song that could help paint you a picture of who Kim Taehyung is, ‘Scenery’ is it.

‘A Brand New Day’ (2019)

‘Brand New Day’ was released in 2019 to go along with BTS’s mobile game, BTS World. V is featured on this song along with j-hope and Zara Larsson (both helped write the song). A song about dreams and reaffirming love, there is no doubt that this song is a bop and perfect for chilling out and listening to when you need it.

‘Winter Bear’ (2019)

This surprise release was a special gift to ARMY from Taehyung, showcasing more of his growth as a songwriter. Entirely in English, Taehyung let us step into how he sees the world for a moment, giving us another soft ballad with those nostalgic feelings we love to have. The MV that goes along with the song was directed by himself, showing us even more of how his creative mind works. It is reminiscent of ‘Scenery’ in this way; he captures his world, not only through his videos and photos but also through this song, sharing it with us to share his viewpoint and feelings. We can’t get enough of how Taehyung’s mind works, and seeing his growth as an artist is a beautiful journey to go on.

‘Inner Child’ (2020)

Taehyung’s solo song from Map of the Soul: 7 is a letter to his younger self. Another song was written by V and RM, the song is meant to capture the struggles that a young Taehyung went through and the message of hope that an adult Taehyung shares with his past self. It is a song that speaks to the inner child in all of us, a song with a message our younger selves could have used. We are thankful for this song’s creation and are once again moved by another masterpiece delivered to us only in a way that Taehyung can.

‘Friends’ (2020)

MOTS:7 gave us so many gems, including ‘Friends,’ a duet from V and Jimin. The song is a tribute to the two’s friendship, and it is incredibly moving. Highlighting specific moments of their friendship (yes, even the infamous dumpling incident), this song shows the growth that their friendship has had over the years. ‘Friends’ is personal, and while showing their growth as people, it shows their growth as artists as well.

‘Sweet Night’ (2020)

So much can be said about ‘Sweet Night,’ where even to begin? Released as an OST for the hit K-drama Itaewon Class, this song that V had a hand in producing has become monumental for his career. At the time of writing this article, ‘Sweet Night’ has gained over 90 million streams on Spotify (the most of any OST on the platform) and received the No. 1 spot on the iTunes chart in 117 countries; this makes Taehyung the first and only artist ever to do so. On top of its success, ‘Sweet Night’ shows the sweet falsetto side of Taehyung’s vocals and is a testament to his talent as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Indeed, no one is doing it quite like Kim Taehyung; seeing his musical growth over the years and the success he has had with his songs is outstanding.

‘Blue & Grey’ (2020)

‘Blue & Grey’ is a song that came to us when we needed it most. From BTS’s latest album, BE, this song was produced with V’s participation and is reflective of emotions we may all be experiencing during this rough time that we call 2020. The song is a bit darker in terms of its subject matter, as it discusses feelings of sadness and depression, feelings that are often reflected in the colors blue and grey. However, this soft pop-ballad is a song that allows us to express these emotions, and we’re grateful that V had a hand in its creation and opens up to us about emotions that many struggle to talk about; he lets us know that it is okay to not be okay. At the time of this article, ‘Blue & Grey’ has reached the No. 13 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, making it the highest-charting BTS b-side to date.

‘Snow Flower (feat. Peakboy)’ (2020)

Taehyung gave ARMY the ultimate gift when he released his song ‘Snow Flower (feat. Peakboy)’ on Christmas Day. The song is meant to comfort fans after the year that 2020 has been, a year that Taehyung describes as a moment when time stopped. With the intention of warmth and happiness, Taehyung successfully delivered a jazz-inspired song that does just that. Having gained one million streams just four hours after its’ release, ‘Snow Flower’ has been well-received by ARMY. A fan theory also shows that the title ‘Snow Flower’ represents that a spring day is coming soon, as the actual snow flowers are a sign that winter will not last forever. This makes the song’s message of comfort and hope hit even harder, and another testament to the brilliance that is Kim Taehyung’s creative mind.

Bonus: ‘Cypher pt.3’

We just will never get over this video of V living his dream of performing ‘Cypher pt.3,’ and we had to include it in this article. It shows off the fun personality that Taehyung has and is a video that will put a smile on your face any day.
