Happy New Year, THP readers! If you’re like us, you may have spent your New Year’s Eve watching one of the many live-stream concerts that were happening. In case you were wondering, we decided to tune into the SMTOWN LIVE “Culture Humanity” concert, and we were completely blown away. The concert was four hours of some of the biggest names in K-pop (NCT, KATNGTA, Taeyeon, Red Velvet, aespa, Baekhyun, Kai, Taemin, etc.), giving us incredible stages and setting the tone for 2021. Viewed in over 186 countries and 38.5 million streams, SMTOWN LIVE was one of the most viewed live Korean concerts. There were many memorable moments from the concert, so we decided to list some of the ones that stood out to us!
NCT Opened The Show
There is no doubt that 2020 was a major year for NCT. Having the boy group’s sub-units open up the concert set the tone for the electrifying performances that followed and made us excited for what the night had in-store.
Wendy Is Back!
After being on hiatus, Wendy of Red Velvet returned to the stage for the first time in a year. She completely owned it during RV’s performance of ‘Peek-A-Boo’ and ‘Psycho.’ We loved seeing her back with the other members and seeing Red Velvet as five again!
This is not a drill! The kings of K-pop are coming back! Now that Onew, Key, and Minho have completed their military enlistment and are reunited with Taemin, it’s time for new music! During the concert, SM played a trailer that showed SHINee through the years, ending with “SHINEE 2021” in big, bold letters. With rumors of the comeback possibly happening in February, we are ready for these men to show everyone why they are still one of the most iconic groups in the game.
Baekhyun and Mark Performing ‘Un Village’ Again
During the 2019 SMTOWN LIVE Concert in Tokyo, fans got the ultimate collab between two of SM’s biggest stars, EXO’s Baekhyun and NCT’s Mark. Baekhyun performed his hit song ‘Un Village,’ and Mark joined in, adding his spin to the track. A year later, fans got the same treat when the duo performed their version of the song to ring in the new year. We couldn’t help but scream when we realized what was happening, and are so happy they decided to perform it once more for fans.
Super Junior, TVXQ! and Taeyeon show us how it’s done.
Super Junior, TVXQ!, and Taeyeon are three 2nd Gen acts that every K-pop stan should know. They have been in the game for years, and during the SMTOWN concert, these three acts gave us incredible stages, showing why fans are still going crazy over them. It was amazing to see the older acts with the new during the concert, and we’re hoping some new fans got to see for themselves why they are considered some of the industry’s best.
SuperM’s ‘Better Days’
SuperM’s stage for their song ‘Better Days’ may have been one of the most beautiful we’ve seen. With AI, SM transformed the stage into a greenhouse, and we could feel the warmth through the screen. ‘Better Days’ is a fan-favorite song, and it hits hard, especially during these times. It was the perfect performance to carry the message of hope that SM aimed to achieve through this concert.
‘The Riot’ and ‘Asteroid’
2020 gave us some pretty amazing collabs between SM artists, like ‘The Riot (featuring Ten and Xiaojun of WayV)’ by GINJO and ‘Asteroid (featuring YangYang of WayV)’ by IMLAY. So, you could imagine the excitement when these two songs were performed! We were so happy to see GINJO and IMLAY and to see Ten, Xiaojun, and YangYang take center stage during these stages. It was a treat that fans were hoping for, and they got it!
Kai and Taemin’s Solo Stages
It’s no secret that Taemin and Kai are two of the industry’s best dancers (and performers overall). We were stoked to see them get their solo stages, especially Kai, after the astounding debut he had with his solo album. ‘Mmmh’ and ‘Criminal,’ although released in the latter half of 2020, were two of the industry’s most impact songs that year. And, after watching these performances, it’s not hard to see why!
A Message of ‘Hope,’
The concert came to an end with all of SM’s artists performing the song ‘Hope.’ The song and the ending ments sent warm wishes of hope and happiness for 2021. It was the artists’ chance to send love and thanks to their fans for their support, as well as encourage us. Taeyeon and U-KNOW’s ments were especially touching, and we are so thankful for these artists who share their talents and give us a bit of joy despite the global troubles.
The After Show
Just when we thought the show was over, RAIDEN, GINJO, and IMLAY came back out for the after show! Each DJ held their own set, spinning some of the biggest hits from SM artists. We couldn’t help but notice that they remixed quite a few EXO songs, making our EXO-L hearts full. Despite there being no live audience, these three had an insane amount of energy, and it kept us watching to the very last second.
