It’s no secret 2020 has been an interesting year. With COVID, killer hornets, and toilet paper shortages everything was insane. Most people would consider 2020 one of the worst years, but here are 20 artists who made the best of the year. So let’s take a look back at 2020 and the artists who thrived despite the circumstances.
Even though he didn’t release any new music in 2020, it was still a big year for Harry Styles. Harry released his last album Fine Line at the end of 2019. Of course, it means we went into 2020 listening to the album and giving it lots of love. Seriously, we can’t remember a single day this summer when we weren’t jamming out to ‘Adore You’ or ‘Watermelon Sugar’ on the radio! He released four music videos and left fans dreaming of taking a trip to Eroda. And let’s not forget the TikTok trend where fans recreated his rainbow cardigan. Harry even made history as the first solo male cover star on a Vogue magazine in December!
Taylor Swift stayed very busy in 2020, giving fans more content than they could ever hope for. In July of 2020 Taylor released her eighth album Folklore then if that wasn’t enough, Taylor blessed her fans with another album called Evermore in December. We still weren’t over tracks from the first album, such as ‘Cardigan’ and ‘Exile!’ We couldn’t imagine how crazy it must’ve been releasing two albums within about five months. She also won the AMAs artist of the year award! It takes a true queen to manage all of that.
5 Seconds of Summer
Just like the rest of the 5sos fam, we started 2020 full of excitement for 5 Seconds of Summer’s new album CALM. When the album came out in March we were not disappointed by what we heard! The boys included some fun songs to dance to like ‘Wildflower’ and ‘Teeth’ as well as some beautiful love ballads, such as ‘Lover of Mine’ and we have to admit, this was one of 5SOS’ best years. The band may have hit a bit of a problem during release week, but they didn’t let that get them down in the dumps. They stayed in good spirits along with their fans. And how could we ever forget their performance at Fire Fight Australia, which left people talking for days and even had “5sos drummer” trending on Twitter for a bit. The boys also won song of the year with ‘Teeth’ at the ARIA music awards.
Speaking of 5SOS, the band’s drummer Ashton Irwin has had an amazing year. Not only did he achieve everything listed above, but in October Ashton released his solo album Superbloom. Fans were in shock when he posted the news on Twitter just a month before the album’s release. Superbloom is an album full of so many raw and meaningful songs. In this album, Ashton got a chance to write very personal songs and share his story with fans. Songs such as ‘Skinny Skinny’ and ‘Scar’ became important to many fans very quickly. This album also allowed Ashton’s fans to better understand him and his struggles.
Ariana Grande started the year with a bang, collaborating with Lady Gaga to release their hit single ‘Rain On Me.’ The success of this song along with ‘Stuck With You’ with Justin Bieber alone would be enough to land Ariana on our list of 20 artists who made 2020 their year, but that was only the beginning. She brought home so many awards for the two songs we lost count. But then in October Ariana released her album Positions and we still can’t shut up about it. Songs like ‘Positions’ and ‘34+35’ have been on the radio ever since. But 2020 still had one more surprise in store for Ariana. Towards the end of December Ariana announced she was engaged to boyfriend Dalton Gomez!
Lovelytheband had a big year as well. In August the band released their second album Conversations With Myself About You and fans were buzzing with excitement. The album features songs such as ‘loneliness for love’ and ‘buzz cut.’ But this wasn’t all the band accomplished this year. They also landed a spot in Selena Gomez and David Henry’s movie This is the Year.
Where do we begin with Selena Gomez’s accomplishments in 2020? She started the year with a new album called Rare back in January. Her hit song ‘Lose You to Love Me’ had a home on this album along with songs like ‘Vulnerable.’ After the release of her album, Selena worked on the movie This is the Year with former Wizards of Waverly Place co-star David Henry. And finally, in September she released her very own makeup line called Rare Beauty, which fans have been in love with.
New York native MAX released his second album Colour Vision in September. This album was huge for the ‘Lights Down Low’ singer and consisted of collaborations with some big names like Hayley Kiyoko and Suga from BTS. ‘Love Me Less’ and ‘Blueberry Eyes’ are just two of the many amazing songs on this album. And the cherry on top of 2020 for MAX is the birth of his daughter Edie, who has quickly taken over her father’s Instagram. Seriously, they’re so adorable!
The Weeknd had a very successful 2020. In March he released his album After Hours which fans had been waiting about four years for. The album stayed at the top of the Billboard 200 for an entire month. This album consists of songs ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights’ which both received a great deal of air time from radio stations. He also won many awards for this album, including an MTV award for best R&B artist and we have faith he’ll keep up the success.
Niall Horan fans were thrilled when he released his second album Heartbreak Weather in March. Songs such as ‘Nice to Meet Ya’ and ‘No Judgement’ made it to radio stations while fans played ‘Black and White’ at their weddings. He won a BMI London Award for pop award song with his song ‘Nice to Meet Ya.’ Niall was everywhere we looked, no judgment there.
BTS had a very successful year in 2020. They started the year with the release of Map of the Soul:7. This album is home to the hit collaboration ‘Boy with Luv’ with Halsey as well as fan-favorite ‘Interlude: Shadow.’ This album was followed by Map of the Soul:7 ~ The Journey ~. Then, In November BTS surprised their fans with Be, a third album. This album contains songs ‘Life Goes On’ and ‘Dynamite.’ They also became the artists with the most #1s on the Billboard charts in history. BTS made their fans very happy in 2020, and we’re willing to bet they’ll stay gold for quite a while.
In October BLACKPINK released The Album. The Album was home to the fan-favorite ‘Lovesick Girls’ along with a collaboration with Cardi B. The hit collaboration ‘Ice Cream’ with Selena Gomez was a huge part of our summer. Their single ‘How You Like That’ broke many Guinness world records. And if all of that isn’t enough for you, they also released a documentary with Netflix called BLACKPINK: light up the sky. Was there anything BLACKPINK didn’t achieve in 2020?
Doja Cat has been gaining fame for the last few years, but 2020 has been huge for her. While technically she released her album Hot Pink in 2019, it was released at the end of the year so many people didn’t discover it until 2020. She released her music video for the song ‘Say So’ in February and people couldn’t stop listening to it! Soon after she teamed up with Nicki Minaj to release a remix of the song. With this new version of the song, Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj became the first two female rappers to hit number one on the Billboard charts with a collab. To finish the year off Doja Cat landed a spot on Ariana Grande’s album Positions with their song ‘Motive’ and was featured in Bebe Rexha’s ‘Baby, I’m Jealous.’
2020 has been a crazy year for Little Mix, even if it wasn’t all full of happiness. In September their show Little Mix: The Search first aired. That’s right, the girls received a show where they were to create a band to bring with them on their Confetti tour. This show gave us the band, Since September. Then in November Little Mix released their sixth album Confetti. Songs like ‘Sweet Melody’ and ‘Not a Pop Song’ can be found on this album. They even got to host the MTV EMA’s where they won the category’s best UK & Ireland act and best pop. Little Mix had to take a moment to breathe when band member Jesy Nelson decided to leave the band. We’re going to miss Jesy, but we can’t wait to see what’s to come.
All Time Low
During quarantine when we just felt like sleeping in all day All Time Low was there yelling Wake Up, Sunshine with their eighth album. Fans were happy to receive songs such as ‘Some Kind of Disaster’ and ‘Basement Noise.’ The album was also home to their hit song ‘Monsters’ which was a collaboration with Blackbear. While the album was pretty successful on its own, The band invited Demi Lovato along for a remix of the song ‘Monsters.’ This remix helped All Time Low land their second-ever entry onto the Billboard hot 100 charts.
Halsey started the new year off right, releasing her third album Manic in January. This album featured many collaborations, Suga, Marshmello, and Juice WRLD being just a few. Hits ‘you should be sad,’ ‘Graveyard,’ and ‘Without Me’ all came from this album. Manic was the first album released in 2020 to certify platinum. Halsey was also featured on BTS’s hit ‘Boy with Luv.’ Halsey even released a book of poetry called I Would Leave Me If I Could.
Dua Lipa played it cool as she released her album Future Nostalgia in March. Some songs on Future Nostalgia include ‘Break My Heart’ and ‘Levitating” featuring DaBaby. She went on to set a record for the UK female solo artist to spend the most weeks in the top 10 with her song ‘Don’t Start Now.’ And let’s not forget her hit collaboration with Miley Cyrus, ‘Prisoner.’
Long time favorite here at THP Mali-Koa had a big year as well. In November she released Hunger her debut album and our hearts could hardly handle the excitement. Of course, we adore the entire album, but ‘Some Things’ and ‘Me Before You’ are some of our favorites. Fans have been waiting a long time for this album, and we’re sure 2020 will hold a special place in Mali-Koa’s heart. We can’t wait to see what she has in store for 2021!
Speaking of debut albums, 2020 is also when fan-favorite Louis Tomlinson dropped his first album Walls. This album was in the works for a while, and fans had been on the edge of their seats waiting to see what Louis’s first solo album would be like. ‘Only the Brave’ seems to be a fan favorite, but others may be more familiar with singles ‘Kill My Mind’ and ‘Don’t Let it Break Your Heart.’ We can say we weren’t disappointed by Louis’s debut.
Gabby Barrett found fame in 2020, which is why she’s on our list! The 2018 American Idol contestant released her debut album Goldmine during the summer. One of her singles from this country album is ‘The Good Ones’ however it’s her second single that grabbed our attention.
