If you don’t know the name Jazmine Sullivan, we’re pretty sure you will after this. Her new project, Heaux Tales, dropped earlier today. Believe us; it’s a hit! In anticipation of the new project, Jazmine dropped her new track, ‘Girl Like Me’ ft. H.E.R, a few days ago. To sum it up, it’s out-of-this-world.
Go ahead and listen. Do you see what we mean?
Now, experiencing a relationship, situationship, etc., in the modern age and ending up heartbroken, qualifies you as “likely to relate to this song.” With social media influencers, societal beauty standards, and a constant flow of information coming at us, getting caught up with what we think we should look like is easy. It’s easy to compare ourselves to everyone else and think that maybe if we looked like that, they would’ve stayed. Jazmine Sullivan understands. ‘Girl Like Me’ is all about wondering what went wrong and why that person chose someone else.
You must'vе wanted somethin' different
Still don't know what I was missin'
The chorus ends with the lines above that seem like they tie in with the theme of the rest of the project. Feeling comfortable with ourselves is, unfortunately, a difficult thing nowadays. Hopefully, Jazmine can lend a comforting shoulder when it comes to dealing with the struggle.
No hope for a girl like me, how come they be winnin'?
And I ain't wanna be
But you gon' make a hoe out of me

Based on this, it seems like Heaux Tales’ emphasis is on female empowerment and taking ownership of our bodies and our sexuality. It’s a powerful message, reminding everyone that women have agency over themselves, which they are often shamed for. Jazmine Sullivan has a statement to make, and we can’t wait to hear the message delivered through this project. We’re all for encouraging people to take back their agency and empower themselves in a society that often discourages that kind of empowerment.
Jazmine’s vocals are flawless. They’re smooth and powerful, and they help her convey the message that she’s trying to send in her music. It’s the kind of captivating voice that makes you want to listen when she speaks and when she sings. We’re so ready for the rest of her project, and we hope you love it too!
Heaux Tales
The teaser comes from spoken word performed by Antoinette Henry. It sets the tone for the rest of the album with spoken-word style verses from different people, such as Ari Lennox and Donna Anderson. Each “tale” explores a different theme, everything from empowerment to love. It’s truly a concept project.
Tracks like the Ari Lennox feature ‘On It’ explore love and empowerment in a sensual, classy way. Jazmine and Ari ask why they should move, why they should put the effort in, when it’s a two-way street.
But tell me why you deserve it
Come on and prove (Come on and prove)
Why I should move
I need more than a text message
You gon' have to pull off somethin' impressive
We can all struggle with this from time to time, giving more than we’re getting. But this track is here to remind us that sometimes it’s okay to make the other person work for it.
‘On It’ ft. Ari Lennox
Then you have tracks like ‘Pricetags’ and ‘Precious’ Tale.’ ‘Pricetags’ explores the financial side of a relationship, of wanting security both in love and in money.
Hunnids, hunnids in my hand (In my)
Want it, want it spend them bands (Yeah)
Yeah, I'ma take all I can get
Money makes the world go round right? Say what you will about a relationship built on bands, but you can’t deny the reality of wanting security, especially if you haven’t had that before. Even if said security is more material than emotional, it can be fulfilling and reassuring.
Heaux Tales also explores feelings of heartbreak and betrayal, with ‘Rashida’s Tale’ and ‘Lost One’ focusing on the aftermath of a relationship that ended because one person did something they shouldn’t and hurt the other person.
I know I'm a selfish bitch
But I want you to know I've been working on it
I know it don't matter
Those are just a few of the notable tracks on this EP. It explores different stories and emotions that deserve to be heard. If you want the full effect, you need to give Jazmine Sullivan a chance and check out the entirety of Heaux Tales for yourself.
