It’s hard to describe our love for LANY with words. From the majestic, intoxicating vocals to the poetic, mesmerizing lyrics to the dynamic, endlessly-playable beats, they sure can make you feel every emotion at the snap of their fingers. And that has us swooning!
For example, their new album mama’s boy has got songs that range from heart-wrenching and raw to danceable and exhilarating. Their album Malibu Nights is soul-crushingly captivating, while their debut album LANY features much more upbeat, feel-good tunes, and that’s just scratching the surface! They also have three EP’s, numerous singles, and several features under their belts, each uniquely their own.
So, to help LANY newbies ease into such a gigantic discography, we have compiled a list of 13 of our favorite LANY songs that will take your playlists to the next level for maximum indulgence. Okay, enough talking, let’s dive right in!
‘Thick And Thin’
This song plays on heavy rotation not only on our playlists but also in our heads. It’s so catchy and inviting, and we thoroughly enjoy the private karaoke sessions we perform when this song comes on. We’re talking full-on concert- singing into a broom handle, dancing around the house kind of performance. While the lyrics sing of a forever love that’s now dissipated, the beat is more upbeat and danceable. The music video also makes us want to ride down the street on the back of a car (safely, of course), but our bucket list can be discussed another time. 😉
‘i still talk to jesus’
What can we say about this song except for WOW! It perfectly captures that feeling of living your life how you want but still acknowledging how you were raised and, in this case, keeping your faith as best as you can. The lyrics in this song are beyond powerful, and we feel the emotional tug on our souls every time we listen. Still, we feel the most powerful lyrics in the song include “I’ve got a past more stained then the glass” and “you might not believe it, but I still talk to Jesus” because they show that no matter where you came from in life or what you’ve been through, you can always find hope and light at the end of the road. It also reminds us not to judge a book by its cover, and we think that that is absolutely beautiful.
This song is such a smooth, hypnotic track. It’s a beautiful testament to a strong, deeply passionate love that we all aspire to have in life. “Oh, my heart hurts so good. I love you babe, so bad” is the lyric that sticks out the most, but the whole song makes OUR hearts hurt so good. What do we have to do for a love like this? The vocals on this track are as smooth as melted butter on hot toast, and we are living for them.
‘when you’re drunk’
This song has some seriously fun beats, and we thoroughly enjoy singing this while dancing around the house in our pajamas, AirPods in, and singing at the top of our lungs. In true LANY fashion, the lyrics are relatively sad, for example, “is it love if you only ever want me when you’re drunk?” And the harsh reality is that many of us have been in this exact situation, and it’s nice to know we’re not alone!
‘Okay’ Feat. Julia Michaels
Julia x LANY is a collab for the decade! This song is every bit as fun as it is relatable, and we find ourselves singing along to the catchy beat 24/7. It’s an ear-worm tune that we can’t seem to get enough of, and Julia Michaels’ vocals added to Paul’s creates the perfect harmonically-rich sound for all your dancing needs… “I’m gonna be okay, right? I’m gonna okay, right? I wish could tell myself that at night.” Also, shoutout to the throwback video: we haven’t been to a skating rink in years!
Another semi-upbeat song that’s very inviting, this one starts with a slower instrumental intro. Then the beat picks up as the singing starts, but with lyrics as real and raw as the ones in this song; it will still entice your deepest emotions to rise to the surface. “Think we should stop before it gets deep. Don’t wanna make promises that I know I can’t keep” is one lyric that sums up what this song is about, and we’re sure we’ve all been in a place where we may have felt incapable of being in a relationship like we needed to be, which is what this song encompasses.
Need a good cry? Ready to have your heart shattered into a million pieces? Then this is the song for you. It’s got some of the most heartbreaking and beautiful lyrics we’ve ever heard, and we’d be lying if we said we hadn’t cried in the shower while listening to this. It’s 1000% going to break your heart, but it’s worth it for such an immaculate work of art as ‘Malibu Nights.’
‘anything 4 u’
A song about friendship and love, we can’t help but think about the person this song was written about and how stunning they must be. Just imagine having someone loving you that fearlessly and you do not even realize it. That sounds like the start of a romantic movie to us, and we’re so here for it (PS- if you need some peeps to star in the music video, hit us up!)
‘I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore’
Do you hear that? That’s the sound of our heart’s breaking inside of our chests. This song is a slightly more up-tempo sad song, but when you’re singing about the pain from a heartache that is too strong to bear, you want to forget that person so the pain will all go away- it’s pretty hard to focus on the more vibrant aspect of it. But with its somber lyrics and dynamic beats, it’s an overall bop that needs a permanent spot on your playlists.
‘heart won’t let me’
This song is just one of those songs we always seem to go back to when we need to calm our minds and bodies after a long day. As Paul sings a breathtakingly, sad song unfolds before us about being stuck in a relationship with the wrong person, but it’s difficult to leave. We think it’s a beautiful story told through tragically, poetic lyrics such as “I should’ve probably already left, but I never listen to my head,” “you used to say you want me now we just say sorry,” and “every time I try- every time I try to leave, my heart won’t let me.”
‘Thru These Tears’
We meant what we said about LANY having many heartbreaking songs, and this is another one. Probably one of the most relatable songs on all the albums, ‘Thru These Tears’ is about the after-effects of a breakup, where you’re trying to get over the person, but it hurts to think about them. But it also offers up a little bit of hope that things will get better with the lyrics “…in the end I’m gonna be alright, but it might take a hundred sleepless nights.” It’s beautifully sad, and we’re obsessed with it.
This is another heartbreaking song about being in a dead relationship but staying together because it just makes sense. You look good together, and everyone thinks you have a perfect relationship, but in reality, that’s not the truth at all. It’s beautifully written and utterly emotional, and we get all in our feels every time we listen to it. With lyrics like “But we look good on paper. We keep foolin’ all the neighbors, they think we’ve got a perfect life ‘Cause they don’t hear us when we fight, so we look good on paper” It’s no wonder this song has us sobbing uncontrollably. “Feelings” is exactly what LANY does best, and we love everything about it!
This song is very much a fun song to dance to, but with lyrics like “it’s never the same love, after the breakup” or “you think you want to be, you want to be alone just wait until you’re crying on the shower floor” it’s pretty gut-wrenching. Still, we can all relate to the lyrics in one way or another, and that’s why it deserves a spot on your playlists.
There you have it, Honey Poppers! 13 LANY songs for your playlists, but if you made it this far, let us offer you a tissue because if you’re like us, you’re probably crying like a baby right now and all in your feels. Better?
Now that you’ve pulled yourself together- add these songs to your playlists, but before you do, we have a surprise for you!
