If you have been online at all within the last week, there is a 100% chance you’ve heard the smash hit that is ‘Drivers License’ by Olivia Rodrigo. This song has just completely taken off and consequently changed the course of Olivia’s career forever. Having your debut single be this big is rare and certainly gives you this leg up where people automatically take you seriously in a way they maybe wouldn’t if a track wasn’t as successful.
Olivia sat down with Zane Lowe to talk about all things from ‘Drivers License’ to her, likewise to us being a mega-swiftie. Olivia started by talking about her writing process, the track, and what an emotional process that certainly was. She says, “I was driving around my neighborhood, actually listening to really sad songs and crying in the car, and I got home, and I was like, “Maybe I’ll write a song about this, crying in the car.” And after that, the song that we all will cry in our car forever too was born.
Another thing that Olivia talks about is how much of a fangirl she is! One artist, we learn she’s a massive fan of is Gracie Abrams! Telling Zane that if she ever met Gracie, she would “evaporate” is something we really relate to! Of course, a chunk of the interview focuses on an artist that everyone knows Olivia loves, Taylor Swift. Olivia recounts to Zane the moment that she woke up to calls and texts telling her that Taylor had commented, “That’s my baby, and I’m real proud” on her photo. Saying, “I just about died… just about died. Literally, I’ve looked up to her as long as I can remember, so it was so sweet of her to do that”.
To finish out the interview, Zane and Olivia speak on The massive hit show that is High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Olivia shares she is currently in Utah shooting for the second season, and we can’t wait! As far as new music goes, She shares she is always writing! So we can only hope that 2021 is full of new music from this fast-rising star.
