It’s True, Midnight Drags Has Got Some Bad Business To Settle

If retro songs with a modern age flare are your thing then hold on to your seats because we have just the album for you! We don’t mean that lightly, this new Midnight Drags album sounds like it hopped in a time machine from the 70s/80s and landed in the year 2021.

Now that we’ve piqued your interest, let’s talk about Midnight Drags’ new album, Bad Business. Keeping true to its name, this album is about just that, bad business, covering themes of longing, loss, criminal endeavors, drugs, the music industry, and depression. It’s got such a classic and vintage sound and style that it feels like something straight from ZZ Top’s discography! Let’s start by breaking down some of these tracks and trying to get a feel for how in-depth this album is!

First of all, can we talk about the band’s latest single? ‘It’s True (I Can’t Stand Myself’)’ is a song born out of a dark place, it’s about self-loathing, not feeling worthy to be in a relationship, and pushing that person away. While the meaning is pretty sorrowful (yet relatable), its up-beat tempo, dynamic instrumentals, passionate vocals, and that sweet guitar solo send this song into overdrive for us. This song sets the tone for the entire album – the flare of 70s/80s rock mixed with that little bit of modern-day pop, spice just lights this song up, and we find that it’s constantly stuck in our heads. It’s one banger of a tune, and it’s definitely going on all of our playlists! You can add it to yours too, by clicking here!

Further to this, the album’s title track ‘Bad Business,’ along with their already released single ‘Ronnie,’ and other hypnotic tracks, such as ‘Brownsburg Strut,’ ‘Steal This Moment,’ and ‘Waiting For A Car Crash’ really hone in on the vintage/retro element to complete the full “Old Skool Rock” vibes. Some of our other personal faves include ‘Somebody Like You,’ ‘Get Out Of Town,’ and ‘Alright,’ and each has its own unique sound that adds a sort of genre-bending element to the album, more of the pop sound than rock.
