Right now, a huge part of the Indian population still resides in rural India, with hardly any attention being paid to the education system that exists there. According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), more than 50% of the students in 5th standard attending rural schools are unable to read a second standard textbook or able to resolve basic mathematical questions. The education system is dealing with a dearth of an adequate number of schools, a lack of pocket-friendly educational institutions, and inadequate infrastructure.

eVidyaloka is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming the educational landscape of rural India. Registered under the Trusts Act, the organization creates digital classrooms for children in remote villages with the support of local communities and Volunteer Teachers from across the globe. With standardized lesson plans and teaching aids for a consistent learning experience, the children from government schools receive e-quality education for a promising & rewarding future.

In honor of SUGA of BTS’ birthday, @SugaSG_India has chosen to fundraise for eVidyaloka, and we’ve had a chat with them to learn more about their charity project.

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, I am Admin Spring and I run an Indian fanbase for BTS member SUGA since Jan 2019. I am a student and I prefer to go with the pronouns she/her.

In honor of SUGA’s birthday, you’ve chosen to fundraise for eVidyaloka. What was it that made you choose this charity?
I conducted a poll between [two] charities that I wanted to collect money for cause collecting for both isn’t possible for us. So it was Music charity or education charity and education charity won the poll, so I chose it. SUGA is very focused on what he does and that made me think of dreams which he often talks about, and thus education came to my mind cause here in India many little precious minds get out tracked just because they didn’t get the right opportunities and music because of course he loves doing music.

Can you tell us a bit more about eVidyaloka?
eVidyaloka is a Bangalore-based NGO that focuses on imparting education to students of Rural government schools in India by appointing volunteer teachers and connecting them to the rural government schools using the power of IT. They not only impart education but also [help] in developing a proper educational environment by setting an e-classroom and such.

How will the donations to the fundraiser for SUGA benefit the charity?
They have a donation program where we saw it takes 3650 INR to sponsor the education of one rural child for one year so we are aiming to raise 20K INR so that we can sponsor [five] children at least which will be 18250 INR and the rest 1750 INR. We want to donate to the organization separately.

It’s a well-known fact that SUGA has participated in philanthropy work and is very charitable. How would you say he inspires you?
Of course, he does, and in all aspects. As a fan base, we try to follow his path as much as we can, he is a great man with wise thoughts and words. When I started this SUGA fan base I was a bit lost bout how can I help a cause alone! But they say if there is a will there is a way. My first project was to donate one month’s groceries to a nearby orphanage which was a great success. Conducting projects isn’t easy but in the end the smiles matter.

We know how powerful fandoms are, what do you think about fandoms and the importance of using their platforms for vital causes such as this one?
I think, for me personally, I feel that when we join a fandom, we do it because we like a certain person or a group, not just for one particular reason but many and that includes their morals, values, and each and every small thing. BTS as role models has been always inspiring us to do good and be good like harboring the purest of emotions in us like love. So of course what we can do in return for them is this. Extending their values to far and wide so that even if some people can’t get access to them directly they can find happiness and peace through us and can bless them for inspiring us this way.

Nowadays, and especially after the pandemic, everything we do is digitally most and so social media and such platforms where mainly these fandoms exist are vital platforms and thus using these platforms for good cause is important, so instead of romanticizing the bandwagon of hate going around we can find peace, happiness, and such values and exist with a pure heart. Also, the voice of fandom is the strongest I feel cause it comes from people of all ages, nationalities, and gender, etc. and it’s variedly diverse and everyone can keep their point in front of the world and we can unify to work towards our goals. How amazing is that!

How can people support your fundraiser for SUGA?
People can go to our Twitter or Instagram, and there will get all information as it’s a pinned tweet.  For Indians, they can donate via GPay, phone, or bank transfer as well as Paytm and for international donors, they can opt for PayPal. All details are given in our account but of course, without any doubt, they can always DM us. Thank you!
