Aston Merrygold is making the most of his solo career! You might recognize him as one of the members of English boyband JLS. Or maybe, you saw his recent appearance as Robin on The Masked Singer! Perhaps you saw him on the West End, starring in a production of Rip It Up or on CBBC’s Almost Never. Safe to say, he’s kept himself busy with various projects!
In addition to all of these other projects, Aston Merrygold also released solo music! His latest track ‘Overboard’ joins his already flourishing catalog of solo music and he’s garnered over 14 million streams on Spotify. Not only that, but he’s preparing for the JLS reunion tour as well, so fans get to enjoy the new solo tracks as well as jamming to JLS! Aston’s booked and busy, so we’re really glad he decided to chat with us about all of these amazing projects!
Your new song ‘Overboard’ has a nautical theme to it in the title, cover art and lyrics such as “middle of the ocean/you and me lady” Why did you choose to incorporate this theme in ‘Overboard’?
Metaphoric word play is always fun when writing songs. Thinking how can we write the love story everybody knows but in a different way and this way really stuck out for me and the team!
Can you tell us a little bit about the meaning behind the song? What inspired it and how did you come up with the idea for it?
It’s no big secret behind the song really.. it was a few days into a writing camp and the ideas were starting to get a bit crazy and complicated. So we stripped it back and decided to write a love story but in what we thought was a really cool spin.
What do you hope your fans take away from ‘Overboard’?
A good vibe!
If someone was going to listen to you for the first time, what three songs of yours would you tell them to listen to first and why would you pick those three?
‘Overboard’ – as it’s a a daily mood sonically.
‘I Ain’t Missing You’ – for all the moments you just want to dance.
‘Get Stupid’ – to see how far I’ve come from my first to now.
When it comes to working on your solo work and working with JLS, is there a difference in your process? Do you have a different mindset when approaching work for both projects?
With any JLS work it’s having to always consider 3 other people so naturally I (we) will always have that in the forefront of our minds mid that be from song writing to socially. With my own stuff there’s no rules for me as I can be expressive as I like.
Are you excited for the JLS reunion tour? On the tour will we get a chance to hear any solo songs, or will it just be songs the band released together? What do you miss the most about performing in front of a live audience?
This is a JLS show so there’s no plans for any solo music on the tour.. that’s all kept for our individual shows. This tour is going to be all about a celebration all things JLS past and present. We’re so excited and amped to see this crowd as it’s been a longtime coming! And to what I miss the most I’d have to say that first second before you actually see the crowd, that rush feeling and knowing the vibe is set!
You were on the West End production of Rip It Up and on CBBC’s Almost Never. Is acting something you’d like to do more of in addition to your music career? Any new acting projects coming up you can tell us about?
For sure acting is where is started entertainment wise. I’ve done a lot of projects from stage to screen especially over these last couple years so it will for sure be taking a front seat.
And you’re playing a manager of a boy band on Almost Never. Have you been able to use your knowledge from being in JLS to help with the role?
For sure! It’s great to be able to draw from past experiences in a role. Makes my life a lot easier.
You were Robin on The Masked Singer and made it to the finals! What made you choose Robin as your identity over other things that could have been used as a clue? How much input did you get into creating your identity for the show?
You get 100% input and get to work with an amazing team behind the scenes! Robin for me really stood out, personally the show itself I wanted to do because I wanted to see my little boys reaction once unmasked, his name being Grayson. In DC’s Batman, Robins second name is Grayson so it just made sense in my head.
How did you end up on The Masked Singer? Do you have any funny or memorable moments from the show?
The call was made and I accepted as I knew it was going to be a lot of fun! The most memorable moment had to be singing closer by NeYo then to only hear him sing after me from back stage and I thought it sounds like NeYo? To then when he was unmasked realising I had sang his song basically in front of him!
We’re really excited to hear more music from Aston Merrygold. Not to mention, there’s the JLS reunion tour too! Check out Aston’s track ‘Overboard’ right here and be sure to check out the rest of his music as well!
