Halsey announced on her Instagram earlier today that’s she’s releasing People Disappear Here, an exclusive NFT series on Nifty Gateway on March 17th. Now, you might be asking, hey THP, what the heck does that mean? Well, we have your explanation right here!
In simple terms, an NFT is a non-fungible token. It’s a type of cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, that allows artists to tokenize their content and assign it a unique value. The difference is, while you can trade one bitcoin for one bitcoin and have the same value, the value of an NFT is unique. In this case, it means that People Disappear Here has a unique value as an NFT, trading it for something else would mean you end up owning something with a different value because there is only one People Disappear Here series! It’s a unique, albeit confusing way for artists to sell their work. Still, confused? You can check out our in-depth explanation of NFTs. We don’t blame you, it’s a new concept and can get pretty confusing!
As for the series itself, it features individual animations of characters from one of Halsey’s original paintings. There is an animation of the original painting in full as well. An eerie soundtrack fills the silence of the animation. If you saw Halsey’s Instagram story about it, you probably caught a glimpse of said characters! Halsey says that these characters are inspired by figures from her sleep paralysis nightmares during the quarantine.
In addition to this being the first time her visual artwork is for sale to the public, proceeds from People Disappear Here will be donated to My Friends Place and Carbon 180. My Friends Place assists and support the homeless youth of Los Angeles. Carbon 180 is an NGO dedicated to the mission of creating a world that removes more carbon than it emits. People Disappear Here follows the drop of Halsey’s makeup collection earlier this year, so it’s safe to say that she has plenty in store for us! We wonder if we’ll be seeing more NFTs from her, and other artists, any time soon!
