Let’s face it, there’s nothing about Wonho that we don’t love. But there’s something extra special about experiencing an extremely talented singer cover one of your favorite songs by another artist. Especially when it’s in a different language. And although Wonho is becoming a multi-lingual king these days, we have to admit our heart still skips a beat when we hear him speaking English. So when he performed ‘i love you’ by Billie Eilish at his special #IWONHOYOU concert back in September, we were unbelievably excited. And now we get a chance to relive the performance with the release of the full version ahead of his upcoming online show #WENEEDLOVE.
The concert is an opportunity for Wonho to showcase his latest mini-album Love Synonym #2: Right For Us, and spend some quality time with his beloved fans, Wenee. It’s happening on Saturday the 27th of March 2021 at 11pm ET (noon KST on Sunday the 28th). Haven’t got your ticket yet? No sweat, you can pick one up now at LivexLive.com!
To hype ourselves up for the show, we’ve put together a handful of our all-time favorite Wonho covers! And who knows, maybe he’ll surprise us with a new one at #WENEEDLOVE…
Billie Eilish – ‘i love you’
As we mentioned before, Wonho originally performed this cover of Billie Eilish’s ‘i love you’ at his first solo concert #IWONHOYOU. Maybe it was because we were watching at 4am, but it hit us hard. Even now, the raw emotions in Wonho’s voice make it feel like we’re sitting right beside him as he sings. His delivery of the heart-wrenching lyrics, “there’s nothing you could do or say / I can’t escape the way I love you,” make us want to reach through the screen and give him a hug. The song seems to speak directly to Wenees as an expression of his gratitude and the pain of separation.
Justin Timberlake ft. Timbaland – ‘SexyBack’
Brace yourself because if you haven’t seen No Mercy yet, this one will be a pure culture shock. You probably know that Wonho made his debut as a member of Monsta X. But you may not have realized that the group had to compete in a grueling survival show to be selected as part of the final line-up. In this round, a baby-faced Wonho teamed up with future bandmate Hyungwon to take on Justin Timberlake’s ‘SexyBack.’ And it was wild. We have no more words to describe this iconic performance, so you’re going to have to watch it for yourself (keep an eye out for some golden reactions from more familiar faces).
2PM – ‘Again and Again’
Honestly, we could watch this performance from the 2018 SBS Gayo Daejeon again, and again, and again, and again. Wonho teamed up with Monsta X’s Shownu, Seventeen‘s Hoshi and Mingyu, and Wanna One’s Jinyoung and Woojin to take on this 2PM classic. He completely embodied the “beast idol” concept with his signature powerful dance moves and charismatic stage presence. This was a golden era, so if you see any suggested videos featuring the return of his ‘Fighter’ hair, we recommend you click. Because if you haven’t spent an entire evening falling into a rabbit hole of Wonho fancams on YouTube, have you even lived?
Justin Bieber – ‘Intentions’
We’re always excited to hear a K-pop version of songs by global artists like Justin Bieber. And knowing that Wonho was personally inspired by Justin’s Seasons docuseries makes this cover even more special. It’s a testament to his duality that this stage was only minutes away from ‘i love you,’ but it couldn’t be more different. Giving off a cute vibe with vibrant pink hair and a warm smile, Wonho’s incredible pronunciation is the perfect complement to his TikTok-worthy choreography. And might we say he pulled off the “my suitcase was too heavy so I had to wear all my clothes through security” look flawlessly.
BTS, Drake, and More (8-Bit Melody Challenge)
Ok, so this one is cheating a bit. While Wonho doesn’t do that much singing in this 8 Bit Melody Challenge, it was so adorable we had to include it! In the game, the staff at Seventeen (the magazine, not the band) played a short clip of a popular song and he had to guess what it was from the melody alone. Sounds simple right? Not with Wonho involved. But amidst the chaos, there were moments where he showcased his beautiful voice and a keen ear for music. These snippets definitely left us wishing for full covers of hits from our other faves. One more, please!
So, do you love Wonho’s cover of Billie Eilish or are you giving JB all your attention? What song are you hoping to hear from him next? Find out if we have the same picks (*cough* Lauv *cough*) in the comments below, on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram!
