Briston Maroney is an American singer/songwriter from Knoxville, Tennessee. We fell in love with Briston after he released his debut EP Big Shot back in 2017, and we’ve had the pleasure of watching him take the world by storm with his indie-rock sound and insanely strong vocals. Briston’s sound is a breath of fresh air – providing us with the perfect guitar riffs to dance along to in our bedroom, but also with the raw, heartfelt lyrics that we can relate to.
Since his debut EP, Briston has released multiple singles and two additional EP’s under Canvasback Music. His hit single ‘Freakin’ Out On the Interstate‘ has now surpassed over 52 million streams after going viral on social media platform TikTok.

Briston Is Back With A Bang
After the huge success that came with Briston’s previous music, he’s back now with a brand new era—filled with sunflowers and orange hearts to coincide with his rock-guitar sound. In early February of 2021, Briston announced his highly-anticipated debut album Sunflower would release on April 9th, met with excitement and praise from friends and fans. Released alongside the album announcement, a recent single, ‘It’s Still Cool If You Don’t’ hit No.1 at alternative specialty radio in its first week out of the gate and brought Briston his highest ever streaming week. The rest of his catalog also saw a huge spike, with every single song hitting a new one-day peak and bringing the Knoxville-native’s catalog up over 100 million global streams. This was all done before the album is even released!

This week, Briston Maroney released his new song ‘Sinkin’,’ the fourth track to be released off his forthcoming debut album. The music joins an official video starring the Nashville-based artist alongside psychedelic visuals.
As with the entirety of Sunflower, ‘Sinkin” was produced by John Congleton and Briston co-wrote the album with the likes of Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and venerated songwriter- Dan Wilson. The new track follows previous releases, ‘It’s Still Cool If You Don’t’, ‘Freeway,’ and ‘Deep Sea Diver‘- which we cannot get enough of! These three tracks were met with critical acclaim from Paste, Talkhouse, Consequence of Sound, and more. This new era does seem like a breakthrough for Briston- paving a way into the indie-rock industry full-force and making a name for himself as the next best thing – which we totally agree with! We’re obsessed!
Let’s Talk Sunflower
Recorded between the Summer of 2019 and early 2020 in Los Angeles, the album is a culmination of the last decade of the now-23-year old’s life. Sunflower will arrive alongside a full-length feature film envisioned by Maroney and longtime visual collaborator Joey Brodnax, with each song bearing its own cinematic accompaniment. Watch the trailer for the visual album HERE.
When speaking of the album, Briston has shared that “coming to terms with the full scope of who the hell I am has been the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. It’s also the only thing that has allowed me to fully experience true joy in my life. Sometimes processing everything emotionally the way I do, has kept me from understanding things logically, the way other people seem to so effortlessly. This has allowed me to see so much beauty and has at times also made me feel so far away from reality.”
He has also stated that “‘Sunflower’ is my attempt at a record about all of those moments, terrifying and serene alike. The times when I’ve felt connected to people and the world, the times I’ve loved, the times I have felt despair, the times I’ve been sure that I’ll never understand and am proved wrong. I am so thankful for the chance to let anyone kind enough to listen know that I love the hell out of life, for better or for worse. I hope it can be a friend to anyone who feels the same way!”
