After taking the world by storm within the last few years, girl in red (Marie Ulven) has jumped from one success to another. At just 22 years old, Marie has topped the charts and has become one of the main bedroom-pop/indie artists that we all know and love. Just two weeks ago, we were blessed with the drop of the new hit single ‘serotonin’ – that has now been streamed more than six million times since its release.
The beat-driven, catchy melody of ‘Serotonin’ has been described as adding a “slick, poppy edge to girl in red’s previously bedroom-pop sound” by Brooklyn Vegan. Could this track be a glimpse into what we can expect from Marie’s debut album – a complete departure from bedroom-pop into something more experimental? Either way, we’re here for it! The track is accompanied by raw, honest lyrics that delve into the human psyche. ‘serotonin’ was also co-produced by GRAMMY-winning producer FINNEAS. This collaboration of two of the most talented artists in music right now was bound to be a hit, but this track has succeeded any of our expectations – hence the massive amount of views in such a short time! Spring Has Finally Sprung!
March welcomed the beginning of Spring, and for girl in red fans, this meant so much more than just some extra daylight. On March 1st, Marie Ulven announced her highly anticipated debut album, if i could make it go quiet, which is set to release on April 30th. And if this wasn’t enough, Marie also announced the dates for her UK/EU 2022 tour, alongside the acoustic version of her single ‘Serotonin.’ The single has been ascending the US Alternative chart since its release due to its vibrant sounds and edgy melodies, however, in a recent YouTube post, Marie delivers a stripped-down, goosebump-inducing version of ‘Serotonin,’ which shows the pure talent behind Marie’s songwriting and vocal performance. The isolated, echoing vocals are utterly beautiful, and the experience we had when watching the performance was other-worldly- it really felt like we were in an empty arena. You can listen to the acapella version of the song here:
A Light At The End Of The Tunnel… Finally
Since the COVID-19 Pandemic corrupted the world, live shows have been stopped at a halt, separating the fans from the artop[sts. It was hard to stay positive when discussing the return of concerts with so much uncertainty in the air, but our prayers were answered on March 19th, with the announcement of girl in red’s 2022 tour. The make it go quiet tour has stops all over the UK and Europe – from London to Paris and Germany to Russia. As well as this tour, girl in red is on the line-up for the UK-based festival: Reading and Leeds. This announcement really does feel like a glimmer of hope after the long year full of live-show drought.
Anthemic Pop Beats With A Hint Of College Indie Rock
Ever since the announcement of girl in red’s debut album, and the release of her latest single, critics have been quick to praise ‘Serotonin.‘ Rolling Stone stated that Marie has “carved out a place for herself in indie rock with her healthy splash of early ’00s college rock.” With the dawn of if i could make it go quiet, girl in red is set to cement her place as one of alternative pop’s breakthrough voices: someone able to articulate the experience of modern youth in all its contradictions and yet resonate with listeners across the age, gender, and background spectrums, too. The debut album is entirely self-written by girl in red and co-produced by Matias Tellez.
For Ulven’s army of fans (1.9 million Instagram & 2.8 million Spotify followers and counting), the album heralds the beginning of an imperial phase that girl in red has been steering towards since crashing into The New York Times’ top ten tracks of the year with her breakthrough single, ‘i wanna be your girlfriend’ in 2018. The tracklist for the album is made up of nine songs, including singles such as ‘midnight love’ and ‘serotonin.’ Pre-order if i could make it go quiet HERE.
