THP Time Capsule: Through The Years With… Sleeping With Sirens

THP Time Capsule: Through The Years With… Sleeping With Sirens

Welcome to a new series here at The Honey POP called THP Time Capsule: Through The Years With… where we look back over the careers of some of our favorite bands and artists to reminisce and to see how far they’ve come. Our time capsule has been opened, so let’s take a look inside!

Our first contender is none other than Sleeping With Sirens. One of our favorite bands of all time (we know, we know YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT!), they just recently celebrated the 11th anniversary of their debut album With Ears To See And Eyes To Hear. So we thought this would be the perfect time to celebrate and introduce this series

First Of All, Let’s Meet The Band!

Sleeping with Sirens is an American alternative rock band from Orlando, FL, that was formed in 2009. They are currently signed to Sumerian Records, and the band consists of five members:

Kellin Quinn– lead vocals, keyboard

Justin Hills– bass guitar

Jack Fowler– lead guitar

Nick Martin– rhythm guitar

Matty Best– drums

Now, if you’re new to being a Sleeping With Sirens fan, then hold onto your wigs because we are about to snatch them. With six studio albums, an EP, and one live album under their belts, it can be a bit intimidating to dive into their discography. Thankfully, you have us to guide you!

So, without further ado, let’s break down each of their albums from the beginning, talk about our favorite songs, and discuss how they have changed sonically over the years (with the exclusion of their live album: Live and Unplugged)!

The band started strong with this absolute masterpiece! This album, their debut, was released on March 23, 2010. Giving us some fierce bangers that we still consider high on our list of favorite SWS songs. It also gave us more of that hardcore sound of the band that we fell in love with. It’s an era that still holds a special place in our hearts and probably always will!

The band’s sophomore album is, quite honestly, still one of our favorites they’ve ever released. It was released May 10, 2011. This album stays true to the Sleeping With Sirens sound we know and love, but they also started exploring a bit more sonically and figuring out where they wanted their music to go. It paid off in a big way and produced some fierce and unbelievable masterpieces.

Okay, okay, it’s happening! Our favorite SWS album is up (technically, it’s an EP, but you get it), and we’re dying to talk about it! This EP was released on June 26, 2012. It consists of five songs (or five scenes for the movie aesthetic) delivered acoustically and emotionally. Included are the acoustic versions of ‘If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn’ and ‘With Ears To See And Eyes To Hear,’ along with three other acoustic songs that seriously showcase how vocally talented Kellin Quinn is! We’re suckers for some acoustic sets, and this album delivers!

There’s only five songs on this one and we love them all, but the songs are:

*Side note: some versions of this EP have Sleeping With Sirens cover of ‘Iris’ by The GooGoo Dolls, which also gets a 11/10 from us!*

Feel is the band’s third full-length album, and it was released June 4, 2013. In our opinion, it’s full of some of the band’s most meaningful songs in their discography, like ‘Free Now’ and ‘Sorry.’ They definitely gave this album a more mellow tone overall compared to the first two full-length albums, but all these years later and we’re still obsessed with it. It’s even got an MGK feature (one of the few features they’ve done), and you know how much we love him as well! Every time we listen to it, it feels like the first time, and we are always captivated by every aspect of it.

Where do we start with this beauty? Madness was released on March 13, 2015, and it houses some of our all-time favorite SWS songs like ‘Better Of Dead,’ ‘Kick Me,’ and ‘Go Go Go,’ but what we love most about this album is how real and raw the emotions throughout it are. Every song has a different sound, but it’s almost like they tell you a beautifully sad story while also talking about real-world topics like mental health, which is beyond relatable. We love that. Sonically, it channels those early Sleeping With Sirens’ vibes with the heavier music and vocals.

Okay, Gossip was released on September 22, 2017, and it has some seriously killer bops on it. It’s not as sentimental to us as some of the earlier albums, but when we tell you this album high-key slaps- we mean it! It doesn’t channel that heavier side of SWS that we adore as much, but we love the experimentation they did throughout this album and what it created. As fans of all kinds of music, we think it’s an exceptional album with even more exceptional tracks.

How It Feels To Be Lost

We’ve reached the last, but certainly not least, Sleeping With Sirens album. This is the band’s latest album, and How It Feels To Be Lost, was released on September 16, 2019. We have come full circle with this one, as the band has tapped into that debut album, hardcore sound for this masterpiece- taking fans on a nostalgic trip but also staying true to that experimentation that they’ve mastered. It’s absolute perfection, and there are no skips on the entire album. *chefs kiss*

We love seeing the change, growth, and progression of the band since their debut way back when, and we love how they aren’t afraid to take chances with their music, but one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s how much we love Sleeping With Sirens!
