Years & Years have finally returned with the upbeat track ‘Starstruck,’ which is out now on streaming services. The single is the first new Years & Years song since the mind-blowing and creative 2018 sophomore album Palo Santo.
Here at The Honey Pop, we can tell you the wait was so worth it.
The new song follows Olly Alexander’s leading role in Channel 4/HBO’s record-breaking show It’s a Sin, which broke and warmed hearts across the world. The series received a fantastic reception from fans and critics and earned the title of All 4’s most significant ever instant box set.
The Meaning of ‘Starstruck’
The feel-good track, ‘Starstruck,’ is an anthem all about human connection. “‘Starstruck’ is about the rush you get when you’re with somebody you’re really into. It’s about holding onto a good feeling and not letting it go. Like most of us, I’ve spent the past year at home, and I wanted to create something super positive and fun for people (and myself) to bop along too. Whatever we’re doing or wherever we are in life, I think we all deserve three minutes of interstellar ecstasy,” says Olly.
We don’t know about you, but we cannot wait to dance and sing our heart out to this bop in the clubs once they are open!
The story of ‘Starstruck’ ‘s creation is so dreamy! “(It) came together one night at a studio in the countryside outside of London. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen so many stars, you get used to them not being there when you live in the city. Since we’ve all had to stop, all I’ve wanted to do is go out and dance. So I’ve been putting all that pent-up energy into the music, Olly explains.
Listening to this song while dancing under the stars with your friends sounds like the perfect summer plan. Who’s down?
Leading Years & Years, Olly Alexander has become one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars. With two successful albums to date, the singer, actor, and cultural trendsetter has earned five Brit award nominations, sold out numerous global tours, and played incredible hometown shows at the iconic London’s O2 Arena and Wembley. Alexander’s energy is entirely unmatched, and we can’t wait to see him perform ‘Starstruck’ live ASAP!
Olly Alexander is an inspiration and a voice for many. He is constantly raising discussions around mental health and issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. For him to use his platform to raise awareness for issues is incredible. For example, he gave an eye-opening speech at Glastonbury in 2016. This was following the devastating events in Orlando at the time.
In 2018, the creative world of Palo Santo was introduced, with an album based on a fictional world where traditional rules like gender and sexuality do not exist. With an ambitious film coinciding with starring British Icons, Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw.
Years & Year’s work seems to be more creative with each era. We’re desperate to hear more about the next album!
The debut album Communion was a multi-platinum album. This started the growth of Years & Years and the remarkable influence that is constantly growing along with Olly Alexander’s name. Especially after It’s A Sin which resonated so deeply with such a broad audience, along with increasing the number of HIV tests taking place, which is just so admirable.
Years & Years continue to push boundaries by challenging genders, identities, and sexualities in an original and inspirational way. Olly Alexander shows in his pop music that you can be whoever you wish to be and identify as whoever your heart desires – or even not identify at all.
The music industry and fans are fortunate to have such an inspirational artist with a platform to project the issues people face every day.
Years & Years are currently hard at work on more music to follow ‘Starstruck,’ and we could not be more excited! We’re sure that whatever music we next hear, it will be uniquely Olly Alexander’s own.
