Darren Criss is back, And He Is Not ‘F*KN AROUND!’

Darren Criss is a multi-faceted artist with an illustrious career spanning television, film, music, and stage. You may know him for his portrayals of Andrew Cunanan in the award-winning series American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, or Blaine Anderson in the FOX global phenomenon, Glee. In fact, Darren actually wrote the song ‘This Time,’ which was featured in the finale of Glee and led him to receive an Emmy Award nomination for songwriting in 2015 for best original music and lyrics for the song – which was well deserved!

Once Glee had said goodbye, Darren started to focus more on his music career, releasing his EP Homework in December of 2017. ‘Homework’ was a huge success, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. The streams from the songs on the EP have now reached a total of over 8 million on Spotify – half of which are probably from us here at THP HQ!

Back With A Bang

Ever since Darren’s music career started to take off, it has been one success after another – Sold-out shows, headlining festivals, featuring on magazine covers, and collaborating with renowned DJ Steve Aoki. But, it doesn’t stop there! April 9th was the start of a new era for Darren Criss, after the release of his brand new single, accompanied by a colorful lyric videoF*KN AROUND. This unapologetic, alt-head-nod anthem is everything we needed and more. The track is the perfect comeback single that excellently highlights Darren’s musicianship through the groovy bassline, accompanied by lead guitar counterparts and those heavenly Darren Criss vocals that we all know and love. Luckily for us, this up-beat, catchy song of our dreams is just the start of something that is going to be huge. The track is the first of several upcoming new songs, which have been described by Darren as “character-driven singles” – what more could we want!

When speaking about the new single, Darren has explained that he began working on the track a while back, and built it up around a simple bass groove. He then “added some live drums, piano, and two different lead guitar counterparts”. He even said that the song sat still for a few years because “nobody seemed all that interested in it” – which is so crazy! Fortunately, though, he didn’t give up on the song, and with the help of some writers and producers, the final song “became something of a head-noddin’ middle finger anthem to those triflin’ people in your life” which was all driven by the attitude of the “driving, dirty bass groove”.

Here at THP, we’re super glad that Darren had faith in the song and did release it because it really is the perfect sing-along, dance-along summer track that we have been waiting for, and we’re so ready to watch as it climbs the charts. Darren plans to make his debut late-night TV performance on April 13th, with a performance of his new track for James Corden’s The Late Late Show – yes, we are counting down the days!

The release of ‘F*KN AROUND’ also arrives alongside Darren’s three-episode appearance on Season 20 of NBC’s The Voice, where he is currently a Battle Advisor to Team Nick Jonas – two of our favorite artists on the same team, it feels like a dream come true! Criss’ final episode airs on April 12th at 8/7c and we can’t wait to watch.

The lyric video for F*KN AROUNDis the perfect combination of vibrance, colors, and perfectly put-together outfits. It was so refreshing to see Darren expressing himself so freely, with his nails painted with a different color for each finger. The video just radiates so many good vibes and we can’t wait to watch it at least 10 times a day for the foreseeable future. You can watch the video here:

Here at THP, we are already obsessed with Darren’s new single, and we cannot wait to see what he puts out next. You can listen to F*KN AROUND’ HERE.
