Since the moment we first heard Olivia O’Brien back in the ‘Root Beer Float’ days, we knew she would become a permanent staple in our music library! She is an artist that writes with so much honesty and always has us relating to her lyrics.
Recently, she announced the news we’ve been waiting to hear! The first part of her next album will be released in May and will be titled Episodes! We can’t wait to have an entirely new album of songs to dance around or cry to!
In celebration of Olivia O’Brien announcing her album and releasing her newest single, ‘Sociopath,’ we wanted to talk about some of our favorite songs of hers with you guys! There are so many solid choices, so, obviously, narrowing it down offered up a challenge, but this list is as solid as they come!
Here at THP, we are horror movie buffs, let’s get that out of the way right off the bat! So this music video was everything to us! Bringing our two worlds together seamlessly, it’s exactly what we need!
The whole track gives off all the horror movie vibes, with the lyrics painting a clear picture. There are so many tropes in this song that perfectly compare things you’d see in those movies with ways a partner can be sociopathic. Olivia O’Brien is a genius for the way she wrote this one.
If this is the vibe we will get off Episodes, we are genuinely even more excited than before. This is really a whole new sound for Olivia O’Brien and shows a much more dark-pop-infused vibe that we are utterly in love with. Maybe she snapped.

If you have been on TikTok at all over the last week, you for sure have heard ‘Josslyn.’ It’s the ultimate petty song and the energy we are always trying to keep when it comes to being cheated on. The track really has taken on a life of its own and solidified Olivia as a household name. We are just thankful the rest of the world has jumped on this train of supporting our girl because we have known how incredible she is for so long!
‘Josslyn’ is a bright pop track that makes the perfect pre-game track. Or if you’ve just had someone cheat on you (especially if it’s with someone named Josslyn, how meta!) you can scream these lyrics at the top of your lungs. It’s just a certified jam, and we truly don’t see a time where this won’t be one of our most listened to tracks on our Spotify Wrapped.
And we can’t talk about this track without talking about this dream of a makeshift music video. Its flower child vibes are something we are totally here for.
If there’s one song we couldn’t recommend more off Was It Even Real? it would be ‘purpleworld’ for sure! This track has always just hit different for us. The first time we heard it, a chord was struck.
This track is the perfect example of how honest Olivia O’Brien is with her writing. That honestly helps us as fans relate even more.
There are so many points in this track that feel like she ripped them straight from our heads, but the line that really sticks out to us is, “‘Cause if I stopped hittin’ you up, then we’d just never talk at all.” Isn’t that a golden truth! We’re sure so many of you have a person that you feel only talks to you because you hit them up first.
‘Root Beer Float’
This was the track that introduced us to Olivia O’Brien. It’s a collab with Blackbear, who we are also obsessed with. This song is super poppy and has such cool beats. We are just as obsessed with the track now as we were in 2016 when it was released.
‘Root Beer Float’ was made to be a summer song. It’s all about having the best possible time with your clique and fills us with so much joy. We can’t wait to turn the volume all the way up on a sunny day in June.
And don’t worry! We didn’t forget about that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis reference! “My top is thrift shop, No Macklemore, no Ryan Lewis (no thanks), you know I had to do it,” iconic!
We honestly haven’t been able to get this track, and especially the chorus, out of our heads since the first day we heard it. Olivia O’Brien knows how to make genuine good catchy pop music at a whole other level. Using a sample of Akon’s iconic track ‘Right Now’ was a beyond genius move. That song has been getting stuck in our heads since 2008, so it’s only fitting it would be given new life.
After the massive success of ‘Josslyn,’ ‘NOW’ proved that Olivia O’Brien could show up and show out continually with these upbeat, bright songs that would occupy a spot on so many of our playlists.
We are about to go turn this track on and dance around our rooms right now just for good measure.
