We’re surprising zero people by saying this, but in case you didn’t know, we’re huge Disney fans around here. And because we grew up in the 2000s, we were obsessed with High School Musical. In fact, we still are, we can still quote the movies and sing all the lyrics because “once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!” So finding out Disney+ would give us a series based on our beloved childhood classic, we kind of lost our minds. And then we lost it again when a second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was announced.
Season two is still a while away, but we have something to keep us excited until then: a HSMTMTS marathon on Disney Channel on May 8! With a sneak peek of Season two to top it off! Yes, our teenage selves are screaming. So, to let off some steam until then, we rewatched the show and decided to list some of season one highlights. Please, enjoy!
**By the way, here’s your spoiler warning for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series because we love you and we’re all in this together**
Nini and Kourtney’s friendship
Ok, not only does this show have awesome female characters, it shows no signs of female competition and it has the friendship of two girls as one of the main themes! Whoever thought of the dynamic between Nini and Kourtney, we love you very much! These girls are simply everything.
They’ve had many great moments throughout the season, but our favourite will forever be their duet on the night of the homecoming dance. Both girls decide not to go to the dance like their peers and instead go out with Miss Jenn to karaoke. And it’s then that we get the killer best-friend duet ‘Born To Be Brave.’ Nini needed a reminder that she’s awesome on her own and Kourtney makes sure to remind her of that real quick. Yay for girl power and bonus points for the awesome dance sequence taking place at the homecoming!
The theatre kids saving Miss Jenn
So, Miss Jenn’s job is at risk, but everyone of the students still wants her to stay because she is the best drama teacher they’ve ever had at East High and they really care about her. So, in true High School Musical fashion, they sing about it. In front of the whole school + the school board. And they win!
This moment was heartwarming to watch and it made us fall in love with the characters even more. Also, seeing the location where ‘Stick to the Status Quo’ took place receive yet another iconic performance was a bonus. The nostalgia hit hard here. Even Mr. Mazzara was impressed, and he really wasn’t a fan of anything musical-related.
High School Musical: The Choosical
Thanksgiving episodes have a history of being extremely cute because they usually revolve around families. But of course, HSMTMTS would put a spin on it and make it about friends. With most parents spending the holiday away from their children, the theatre kids all gather at Ashlyn’s house for a party, and that is a big turning point for them.
The party is where everyone finally starts to get along with everyone. No more fights or silly rivalries. And it’s all over a board game Carlos invented years ago but never had anyone to play with: High School Musical: The Choosical. Everything was based on High School Musical and they all have a great time playing it together, as a team. The scene had two effects on us: we cried at how beautiful it was and we wanted to play the game too!
Gina comes back
We all felt our hearts be ripped out of our chests when Gina got the call from her mom saying they’d be moving again and she wouldn’t be able to do the musical with her friends. And to know it wasn’t the first time she had to abandon everything was just the cherry on top of that very painful scene.
After that, she leaves and everyone thought it was the end. And then E.J. came to the rescue! We find out at the end of the final episode that he was the one who flew Gina back to perform with them. And what a performance, ladies and gentlemen! Gina killed it during her dance solo during ‘Stick to the Status Quo!’ We’re so glad she’s staying for season two.
Ricky’s “I LOVE YOU!”
Raise your hand if you also screamed when Ricky burst out an “I love you!” to Nini after the show. We know we did. It was just too cute how he started really nervous and then was listing all the moments when he was in love with her but didn’t have the guts to admit. We’re softies for these kinds of romantic confession, ok?
But as cute as their getting back together moment was, it was soon followed by the biggest cliffhanger for season two: Nini got an invitation to attend a fancy school focused on music. We have no idea what’s going to happen after that. Will she accept it? Will she stay at East High? How is that going to affect her and Ricky’s newly-reformed relationship? We have no clue, but we can’t wait to see!
It’s safe to say we’re really looking forward to season two and will definitely be watching the season one marathon on Disney Channel on May 8.
