“I put a spell on you, and now you’re mine!” We all remember hearing Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker singing that in Hocus Pocus, right? The 1993 movie is an absolute Halloween classic we’ve been watching for nearly 30 years, and we’re finally getting a sequel!
After getting the news about Disenchanted, Disney came for our hearts again by bringing back the Sanderson Sisters for another movie. Set to begin production in the fall, the second installment of Hocus Pocus will be coming to Disney+ in the fall of 2022. And in the words of Winifred Sanderson herself, “now the witch is back, and there’s hell to pay!” Ok, maybe not hell, but three decades without a sequel, at least.
We’re aware that some people may not have watched the original, so allow us to give you a quick explanation. In the distant year of 1993, a teenage boy named Max takes his sister trick or treating in Salem. The siblings end up at the house of Alisson, a girl Max has a huge crush on, so naturally, he invites her to join them. An important thing to know about Max is that he doesn’t believe in the supernatural. Witches, ghosts, it’s all “just a bunch of hocus pocus” to him. But Alisson believes, and, being a teenager, Max decides to use that to get closer to his crush. He challenges her to take them to the Sanderson Sisters’ house and “make a believer out of him.” When they get there, he accidentally brings the witches back to life.
Cut to 2022, all we know is that apparently no one’s heard of Halloween 1993, because three young women bring the witches back once more and now must stop them. We still don’t know if any other members of the original cast will be joining the sisters, but we do think it’d be pretty fun to have adult versions of Max and Alisson in the movie.
By now, we think it’s clear we want to encourage everyone to watch this movie, you won’t regret it. It was directed by Kenny Ortega, for goodness sake! Of course, you’ll love it! And speaking of directors, Anne Fletcher will be the director of the sequel. She’ll have by her side: Adam Shankman, Ralph Winter, and David Kirschner as executive producers, Lynn Harris as producer, and Steven Haft as co-producer. We’re sure they’ll do a stellar job in bringing our favorite witches back to life (and our screens).
Hocus Pocus is the perfect Halloween movie for scaredy-cats like us who don’t enjoy being afraid of our own shadows. And now we’ll get a sequel to watch every year too!
