Selena Gomez is a beauty, not only externally, but internally from her heart and soul. Along with her personal challenges and health issues, she has made herself shine in every avenue she had ventured on. Starting as a child star on Disney Channel and turning into a mental health campaigner takes a lot of gut, passion, and tenacity. And according to us, every step Selena has taken, whether there was a slight stumble or not, has been on the right path.
What goes around comes around…
Who wouldn’t love her? She is a gorgeous person! Whether it is street styling or concert outfits or even photoshoots, she has always mesmerized us with her looks and talent. But she is not just a woman with a glamorous career, she is also a responsible citizen. She understands the meaning of love, what heartbreak brings to a person and how serious mental health is. The ‘Same Old Love’ singer is also a producer of one of the most famous Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why. Being someone who lives with depression and anxiety, which she experienced on her Revival tour, she understands the value of a call for help.
I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting on stage, or right after leaving the stage.
Selena Gomez during a recent interview.
To some people, it is unimaginable to see such a charming and happy face, facing such hard troubles, but mental health issues can impact anyone. In addition to these, Selena also faced problems physically, as she revealed back in 2015, that she was suffering from Lupus. But what helped her have the strength to fight and who had her back all the time? They were her friends, one of the closest being Taylor Swift and her squad. It was also her friend, Francia Raisa, who had donated a kidney to her, which Selena posted about on her Instagram.
She is a fighter!
One of the biggest setbacks in her life is battling depression. Throughout the years she has learned how to be kind and generous to herself and has found a way to share this with others, which in return empowered her even more.
“In 2014, this stage was actually the first time that I was authentically, 100% honest with all of you. I think it’s safe to say that all of you know my life whether I like it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here (holds chest).” She breathed, “I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love. I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you. If you are broken you do not have to stay broken. If that’s anything whether you respect me or not that’s one thing you should know about me. I care about people. Thank you so much for this. This is for you.” She spoke with all her love at the American Music Awards in 2016.
I’m so RARE
Her make-up line, Rare Beauty, launched on September 3rd, 2020, and the products were made in support of those who have a problem opening make-up packaging, due to Lupus or other health concerns. It also promotes self-love and inspires millions of women, making them feel Rare. This can be noted as one of the biggest steps in Selena’s career as a successful businesswoman.
The company also focuses on the importance that should be given to people suffering from mental health issues and clearly sends a message that it is more than just a myth. Rare Beauty organizes weekly chats to create a safe place for opening up about one’s issues and reaching out for help if needed. It gives strength in how to speak up about issues and also gives everyone a place to find the support that they need.
Mental health is personal for me. Figuring out how to manage my own mental health hasn’t always been easy, but it’s something I am constantly working on and I hope I can help others work on, too.
